Hey guys, This is my first post. My name is levi and I'm hoping to get some wisdom from you guys. Forgive me in advance if this isn't the right spot for this thread, admin, feel free to move it if so.

a little background on myself, I've been a mechanic, whitewater raft guide and now I manage an auto zone. I'm 26 but not your average hooligan ricer punk. I'm actually a jeep guy and gave up my jeep for the gas mileage of the honda and i know i can still have a little fun with it.

i bought a 94 honda accord lx i think. it has every option, power everything with a sunroof, but all the badges have been removed. it has an h23a1 block and i believe an f22 head. ill attach a pic of the engine, though I'm not sure how good it is as the PO sent it to me. it runs great makes lots of power but smokes intermittently. its oil smoke for sure. and the PO has stated that it does burn oil. it comes and goes and isn't awful, but its def smokes sometimes. i don't mind it as long as it runs well, and isn't going to damage anything. i already replaced the PCV valve as from what i read from searching as a quick attempt to fix it. i only put about 5 miles on it since replacing it, so i know if there is still oil in the intake, it will take some time to burn out. if the pcv doesn't solve the issue, where is my next place to look?

it has a cold air intake, cat back exhaust, full header, ect.

speedo doesn't work, which is fine because i have a GPS (i know about the VSS and gauge issues from searching and will look into them in time) everything else seems to work great minus the power antenna! haha.

thanks in advance everyone!!:D

heres the crappy engine pic. if this doesn't help, ill take a better pic with my iPhone.

p13/p14 is a standard h-series head code. maybe it goes to f as well (i'm not too up on this series).

what's up with all that red wire? it's not stock... and is asking to melt. if its an alarm or something, loom it and tape it out of the way.

if the pcv didn't clear it up, next step is a compression/leak down test (there's articles in the articles forum on this) to see if your insides are good or not.

Hey I just Purchased a 95 prelude SE from someone and I ran into an oddity. My block says its an H23A1 however my Head is a Vtec head I just blew a head gasket and am replacing several parts for my motor now and am not sure what the deal is. What I have found is that the H23A1 is non Vtec and the H23A is the Vtec version so im wondering if its plausible that someone modded the car and bolted on the 23A head to the 23A1 block and if thats even possible.

Hum, I'm even more a noob to this forum and mechanic than the OP but as this thread is stated for newbies I almost feel at home :D

Then, I have a simple and single stupid noob question: Where can I find what motor I exactly have on my 1997 Accord EX I know it's supposed to be the vtec one but some stuff make me believe it maybe the non-vtec.

I am looking for the "label" on which we can read H23A1 in this thread, I dont know where it is on the motor.

Thanks a lot!

If it's vtec, it must have a head swap on it. IT is possible. it's similar to doing an ls/vtec or cr/vtec on the b-series blocks.
Generally, you match the head gasket to the head, as the vtec head usually has an extra channel on it, but i'm not certain on the h-series. Keep the old one and match it up.

In general, you should start your own thread. yo'ull get better answers as more people will check it.

Accords didn't come with an h-series stock. They were the f-22s and f23's for the most part. Look right in front where the block meets the tranny near the bumper level height, and there should be a stamped code.
The head has a casting on it, usually by the exhaust manifold. It may be gunked up and hidden.
f22s are both single cam vtec and non vtec. there's a bunch of varieties.
