Yahoo answers is vague and dumb.

Yeah, that wiki doesn't clear anything up. Subtraction still yields the same result.

The significance, as i recall (And I don't remember the actual equation) is to look at the problem from another perspective. I don't clearly recall how, but you're looking at the problem here from the perspective the shirt seller, and not the principals.

The missing dollar is in your hand (exactly as the problem stated) It's not in your parent's possession, and it's not in the shirt seller's hand either.

I'm on the run now, trying to get to work and focusing on some work, but think this through:

Computers can't subtract. They aren't capable of the function. They actually add negative values. So take a look at the formula, and use only subtraction - But subtract by adding their negative values. Also, give the parents 50 cents back and keep 2 dollars. Voila.

Steve is exactly right, its looking at the problem from the wrong perspective.

You owed your parents 100 and gave them each one back. The bill in your hand is left over from when you bought the shirt. Its tricking you on this math:

100-97=3 and 100-2=98 They're two completely separate transactions that the riddle is trying to make into one.

You saw a shirt (or something less retarded to spend 97 dollars on), you saw a mad tyte pair of gsr black leathers for 97 dollars.

So you ask your mom to borrow 50 dollars.

Then ask your dad to borrow 50 dollars cause you're a worthless scavenge apparently.

Then you go buy them, and have 3 dollars left. You give your mom a dollar back. Total debt to her: $49

Then you give your dad a dollar back. Total debt to him: $49

You stick the remaining dollar in your pocket. Thus yielding your total debt:

49 to your mom
49 to your dad
1 that you stuck in your pocket instead of giving back cause you're worthless.

49 + 49 + 1 = 99

Where is the missing dollar?

What was spent has nothing to do with what was borrowed

Borrowed $50 + $50 = $100
Spent $97 + $1 paid + $1 paid + $1 kept = $100

Owed $49 + $49 = $98
$98 - $1 kept = $97 spent

Here's a riddle for you.

How do you get an Asian person to fail at solving a math problem?

What was spent has nothing to do with what was borrowed

Borrowed $50 + $50 = $100
Spent $97 + $1 paid + $1 paid + $1 kept = $100

Owed $49 + $49 = $98
$98 - $1 kept = $97 spent

This makes the most sense to me. I went to bed looking like confusedjackiechan.img last night.

.... that awkward moment when you realize your racist joke target group can hear your racist joke....

You RECEIVED +$50 from mom and +$50 from dad=$100. You PAID -$97, you paid mom -$1 and dad -$1= -$99. $100-$99= the $1 in your pocket. And TADA there's your dollar.

Need to introduce him to the one person in high school that was bad at math- but she was named for a Shakespeare character and was awesome at the literature artsy type stuff. ;)

I wouldn't know, I always make racist jokes in front of random raced people.

I'm doing a crab feast at our house this weekend.

White
Vietnamese
Chinese
Korean
Japanese
Indian
Pakistan
Turkish
Black
Hispanic (Mexico y Peru)

I hate every race equally and am not one to hold back my thoughts.

So onto the question of how to stump an Asian person on a math question.

Start the question out with. "You saw a shirt for $97" At that point the Asian would say it's a trick question, no one would look at a shirt for $97.
