Assuming all goes well with the house, i want to add home security but nothing with a monthly fee like ADT. Does anyone have experience with h/s?

Im looking at this system. Most important feture to me is I want to be able to view from Android phone or tablet live 24/7. Not too worried about night vision since I will be there 90% of the time at night so if its not ultra high quality night vision it's not a big deal.

Night Owl Poseidon-85 Security System - 8-CH, H.264 DVR, 500GB HDD, 8 Cameras, Smartphone Viewing, Tablet Viewing at TigerDirect.com

I also want a DIY security alert system with alarms for the doors and windows but not sure what to get.

Any ideas?

Interesting. I'm curious as well.

I've seen a lot of these deals around the internet and costco. I once hired an electrician to install a 6 camera costco jobber for a country home I was working on. Only problem is the customers were very old people and will doubtfully ever give me feedback.

Drive around until you find one of these.

Steal it and put it in your lawn. Burglars will move on to the next house to avoid the hassle. All for the price of a little gas.

Bj's has a unit on sale this week for 350 IRRC with 4 cams (up to 8 ch if you buy more cameras) the dvr unit, and it has the apps/internet stuff you're looking for too. It had good reviews, even on th night vision side of it. Also has motion activatoin so it doesn't just record dead air all day.
I've been looking into getting something as there's been some smash and grabs in parked cars overnight a block up from me the past couple weeks. These crooks keep roaming free becase theres no evidence. a movie on camera = evidence :)

Putting it in is going to be a PITa though... especially for my unhandy ass so i never really looked into it much further than browsing around.

The biggest downfall to all these things is that the relay on your home internet connection. A real crook would probably just cut your lines before going in.
A 3g-capable unit for back up would be bad-ass. But im sure that the cell company would want their $45 a month for another device on the plan too.

someday...

Mount a dummy camera out of reach and post a sign that the property is monitored by video surveillance... an ADT sign might help too

I don't want to put fake shit up. The signs are a good idea but I want a legit system. if they are desperate enough to go around cutting all the cameras then so be it. I'll still know because i'll have it live on video and I can call the cops.

I have two dogs, one is a lab/greyhouse mix who is very intimidating as she barks like she wants to kill you and one is my beagle who i love more then life itself. And of course my avator indicates i have a gun :) But does me no good when im not home. Im more worried that somone would hurt the dogs than being worried about someone stealing my stuff. if someone harmed my beagle, it's life in prison for me cause if i caught them or found out who they were, so help me they would pay 100 times over.

wow sorry i became another person there for a second.

I'm also interested.

Looking for cameras with at least 600 lines. The 420ish line cameras fucking blow for video quality.

I have yet to see a 600+ in action.

yeah 600+ TVL would be ideal but your not going to get a whole system of 600TVL cameras for anywhere near what i want to pay, $400 bucks is a great deal for the above linked system. an 8 camera system of 600TVL, your dropping likr $1500 bucks or more

Work from home and just sit on your porch polishing a shotgun all day long. I'm sure if enough people see you word will spread about the crazy bastard who is always on his porch with a shotgun.

Running all those cables sucks. and 60' probably isn't enough once you factor in staying along walls/studs and hiding it/etc routing through attics/etc/etc. I'm going to try to find a set up with wireless remote cameras. Would make install 1000 times easier. Sure, it may be easier to hack, but who cares. if they have tech to hack my cams, they are going to take what they want any way. This is mostly for petty thieves, and to see when the ups guy comes with E's boc from woot off. lol

The 14*F min temp is a bit worrysome too. it gets into the 10's here some nights in the winter.

I'd just pay a professional electrician buddy to do it? They're good at running those cables, etc....

I plan on mounting all my cameras right under my eves. All wiring would go through the attic only. Seems easy enough.

I don't think it has ever gotten down to 14F here.. :p

yeah man but i hear really shitty reviews on the wireless ones. the video always seems to stop working and they are much more $$$ too. if you find a good set, post em up, i'd be curious

Couldn't a wireless signal be scrambled?

sure. and a theif who has that tech is going to get in. this is moslty to capture smash and grab street punks and other pos'es that our tax dollars pay for.
