Friend of mine is an instructor at the airport outback of where I work. He came in today and said, "hey, the mechanic just finished up the motor to an airplane and I need to take it up for a test flight and to break it in, wanna go?" I couldn't say no to the idea of an engine that may or may not have issues that wont be found until after we take it up. Sign me up!

We were limited to 1000 feet, but that was low enough to get some cool shots.

USNA is a really pretty school from the air. I just wish I had more heads up so I could have taken my SLR with wide angle lens. Sadly I had nothing but my Iphone for taking pictures. =(

P.S James this is about 20 miles from Baltimore and 25 miles from DC, check out just how chitty the area is and how much crime has run it down.

I've been in the exact same situation actually. A friend called me up and said "Hey, you want to go flying?" I said hell yes and drove an hour and a half. Then when I got there he was like "Oh, we're test pilots today. Nobody has taken this plane up since they changed the engine. It was also my first time in a plane. Of any kind. It was really awesome. I didn't have such a nice view, but it was still a blast. It was a low wing 68 (ish) Cherokee.

This exact plane, actually.

Well, I guess you can scratch test pilot off your bucket list. lol

Yeah, that friend is a flight instructor, and was like I'll get you a deal, you pay for the plane and I'll give you free flying lessons, I could have you solo in 20 hours. Awesome! How much is it?? 80 bucks an hour... Oh... That's $1600...

80 an hour for a plane rental doesn't really seem that bad
i'd like to learn how to fly, seems like a good skill to have

Plus gas. And no, it's not bad at all. It's just a tiny little airport and they have mostly planes from the 60's. I'm still thinking about doing it.

I need some friends who can fly. sure would cut my time and cost when I head to Cali. :(

My uncle used to have his pilots license when I was a kid. Went up multiple times in those little things. Not sure what they were but he was in a flying club that had 2 planes. Lots of fun.
