We're all getting old.

I remember when I was about the oldest cat in the game.

Most of what I know about the generations that are coming around now - No one is even driving. Forget about having a car as a hobby or a passion.

When I was dating none of the women I dated could drive. Even my wife - who I taught to drive little over a year ago - Has maybe 1000 miles under her belt in that time.

People are just becoming pedestrians, I guess.

I don't recognize any of those members. I agree about these kids becoming pedestrians though. Girl I'm talking to is 22 without a license. I don't mind driving, but it would be nice if she could just come to my house every now and again without me having to go get her.

my g/f didn't go on the highway until she was 21. was afraid of it.

I know ! This stuff is freaky as hell.

When I was a kid I was vibrating from thinking of driving. I've driven what must be way over a million miles in my lifetime, and I couldn't imagine a life where I wouldn't be able to. But my wife ? She wants to live in town so she can walk to the store instead of driving there.

And my nieces and nephews.. They have a car that they share, or they simply don't like driving. I don't get it.

Look at the list again today... All old people.

thats weird that you guys are saying people dont want to learn to drive, ive never noticed that. Maybe because ive never lived in a metropolitan area where walking everywhere is an option. Also, im not that in touch with the new generation. Whenever i see people walking or waiting on the bus, i just assume they are poor, or have a lot of DUIs lol.

My old condo was on a major route with a bus stop out front and a lot of stops up and down the road. I got the same impression that it was for poor people, teenagers, and people with dui's To get into Hartford it would be quicker to drive on your own than take the bus, even sitting in traffic.

From the Boston Driver's Handbook:

"A pedestrian is someone who has lost their car."

Kids are like that around here anymore. I couldn't imagine being older than 16 and not having my license. It was my freedom. I was my own man after I had a car and a license. I could go anywhere. Do anything. It was... magical. I was the baddest mother fucker to ever rock a bright blue drop top Sunbird.

Its weird to me. The majority of kids I grew up with are flat out losers now. There are a few that are really successful though.

They aren't the ones I would have pictured turning out successful though. Funny how that works.

I agree. I know high school pot heads that are successful as hell, and I know kids that were in the honor society that are raging drug addicts. And me? I'm somewhere in the middle...

successful drug addict? :/

I dabble in a bit of success and a bit of drugs. Actually, I work a job a monkey could do, but I've cut it back to just occasionally smoking weed. Left all the other stuff behind.

Driving isn't really that efficient. Most suburban communities are built around major businesses. We're lucky we have a lot of room in the US, but in reality eventually the populations surrounding the major urban centers will be built up enough to require similar mass transit found in major cities.

I'm guessing half of my office participates in carpool or bus. It's way cheaper to ride in a carpool van than drive your own car 30 miles. It's shorter time wise, hov access, free onsite parking, etc. You only pay for days you ride and you settle at the end of the month. And yes, I live in Seattle and have friends that don't have licenses and will never require them. Walk a few blocks to work, take a cab, bus, etc.

thats so bizarre.

Having a car and driving has always been freedom to me. Ive almost always had two vehicles, and car and truck. I guess thats the difference... when you have lived in more rural to suburban areas it requires longer drives to get many places. I mean what do people do when its the weekend and they want to go somewhere an hour or more away for a concert, sporting event, beach, etc? For gods sake, what if theres an emergency and you have to get somewhere immediately in the middle of the night... waiting on a cab? fuck that.

That's the thing for the majority of them. Most of the stuff is there. If they're going out of town, its usually coordinated. Etc.

While, I'm in a similar boat of equating driving to freedom, I completely understand and love being able to get hammered and walk home from the pub.

Then you drive the wrong car.

When I went to Florida for vacation in 08, the friends I stayed with, she was renewing her learners permit at age 22. She hated driving, and he was frustrated because he always had to drive so they never went out and did anything. I can see Cels point on this one.
