Does anyone here know anything about appliances?
Tax season is finally over and my dryer broke about a month ago so I have some catching up to do with my pile o laundry.
My first thought it to either go to a guy i know and get a used one for a buck or 2, or go to home depot and get something in the sub $500 range?
Any suggestions? My washer is some hand me down jobber from the inlaws, nothing super huge or super fancy, pretty plain jane.

maytag> everything else . my opinion.me and my family have used just about all the name brands, my great aunts are still using the 20+ year old maytag stuff so this time around we went the same route with no problem so far.

We've got a Maytag set we bought at HD about 10 years ago. I think it was around a grand for the pair. No problems at all.

My mother in law has a Kenmore (sears brand) and has had to have the washer serviced at least twice in the same time period.

If it just stopped getting hot, chances are its just a fuse... if it gets hot but doesnt dry, most likely a clogged internal vent or the exhaust tube

Im using a whirlpool washer and kenmoore dryer i got on craigslist 5 yrs ago for $150... only serviced them once each... water pump was leaking on the washer, and the fuse went out on the dryer.. total cost of parts.. $50 because i fixed them myself

this dryer came with the house and is prob from the 70's when puke yellow appliances were all the rage
we took the existing washer and dryer down to the basement and were running some hand me downs from the inlaws, but the dryer shat the bed so i junked that and started using the one that came with the house

it still turns fine, just doesnt get hot
might be a fuse, maybe something to look into.
not sure where i would even begin to look for a fuse on a 1970's dryer

post up the model number.. i'll find it.. :D

if its really old, it could be the heating element..it might be better to replace it, even if its a used one... its probably not to energy efficient

Most dryers use the same parts and were built in the same factories under a different name. They are easy to work on.

If it was built in the 70s it's probably about as efficient as a midget trying to power a car. By hand. By turning the axle.

a month ago we gave away a good, working, recently serviced whirlpool from the 80s for scrap :/

Its a GE, not really 100% on the year. The color in the picture doesn't really do it justice because of the flash. Its much more piss yellow than it looks in the pic lol

IMO, upgrade.
dryers suck electricity like no other. the in-time use of a new efficient model will pay for itself in a few years, especially with the high ny generation rates.

I have maytag elites front loaders. a grand a pop back in 2007. 0 problems so far at all.

if you're looking to do it on the cheap, check out a place like sears scratch and dent, the pitt, etc for a slightly abused but new model.

Used? craigslist has a bunch probably.

Do you have an appliance repair shop near you, they can get you the right parts. I fixed my dryer for like 15 bucks for new thermostats. A lot of the parts are universal since most a lot of appliances are made in the same factory but labeled differently.
