one of the crazier things in our new place, is the fact that almost none of it is square. it is a new, older building (about 25 years newer than the one we moved out of, so it atleast has insulation in the walls) .

we had a neat challenge here, i had to "cut up" a door to fit an archway sized hole. there was a previous door here, but apparently it was not up to snuff.

i have since re-aligned all the kitchen cabinet doors too, installed new catch hardware. this is from before we moved in.

here i had roughed the door in using some basic measurements. i found out the bottom of the door needed to be a half inch wider, then took off 3/4 of an inch so the hinges would fit. luckily i only made about 5 basic cuts to get here. i was impressed! it is not perfect... but it will completely suffice. it IS a hollow door, and for now i left the top unfinished as a just incase. inside where the hinges bolt, i slid down thick blocks of wood for the screws, and held them in place with a broom handle so the hinges had some meat behind them.

and here is the finish product with the knob installed, and the pocket for the striker chiseled out. it closed perfect, and doesn't rub on anything. a little bit of felt edging to be installed later and it will be fine.

ayla is pleased as well. now she can have her door closed at night and keep cool with the AC.

im assuming that was a room that originally wasnt intended to be a bedroom?
odd shape for a bedroom doorway.

adding the trim around the inside of the doorway will def make it look better, and give the door something to stop against. should do that soon so you can avoid the terrible crunching noise the one time she tries to just swing the door shut real quick and pulls the hinges out.

good job on the shape though, would def be a bitch. and if you decide to stay long term and want to make it nicer, you have a good starting point for cutting the next door.

good job dude. used to work at a custom millwork shop and hollow core doors are a bitch to customize due to the fact there's really nothing structural too them other than the edges. Cutting down the height is simple enough but changing the shape is another story.

There is a guard on the hinges to prevent it from swinging into her bedroom and breaking :)

i was surprised at how much "cardboard' was inside. the door really feels solid and does not flex at all. i will probably fill the top with expanding foam in a few weeks and then glue some white veneer to the top to seal it.

Yep that's all that's in them is corrugated cardboard and a few strips of wood around the edges.

i thought there would be much less. i've been in other hollow doors that were about the same size and half the weight.

watch out with that expanding foam, better off using pieces of wood.
and a hinge stop is no match for the leverage of a door... just throwing that out there
and why did you make it open into the kitchen instead of into the bedroom?
space requirements?

i'm a foam pro! believe me.

the door weights about 15 pounds and they are heavy duty hinges lol. if it busts... fuck it.

because girlfriend.
