what are you looking to get out of it?
what is your budget?
how mechanically capable are you?
what are your long term intentions for the car?

Daily drivers car, stage 2 ish possibly boosted, 3k, will be undertaking all the work myself
And your experience level is??? Don't be shy, everybody has a starting point. :) Also, what about shop space and tools, etc.

being that "stage 2" doesnt actually mean anything
please be a bit more specific

fast road cams (stage 2) first engine internal modding car messed around with quite a few cars when i was younger 15ish bit first serious project. Thanks for your responses

And you have basic or entry level experience. :). That's just fine and it showed via your questions and comments. What about tools and a work area?

If it's a daily driver, you're pretty limited in things you can do to it. Your basic bolt-ons would be the wisest place to start.
Intake, header, decent exhaust would be a good starting point for the engine. Upgrade the brakes, suspension, wheels, tires, and learn to drive your car. Consider it "getting your feet wet" :)

Adding an aftermarket camshaft is pretty much a waste on a d16y8. The potential gains just don't justify the cost/work (to me, at least.)

Turbocharging a car is a whole different animal. Even if you leave the engine components stock, the addition of the entire turbo system adds plenty of new places for failure to occur. Since you have very limited experience modding and working on cars, I'd advise staying away from forced induction for right now.

ok thanks for your honesty and opinions, i have access to a wide array of tools and decent sized work space. Gonna start of with exhaust system and manifold, is it worth polishing the ports while there open? Then Il look into the induction aspect, what would you recommend? Thanks for sharing your expertise i am a novice after all

Don't polish ports - years ago that was done, now more is know about the flow and it's frowned upon. Match ports, de-burr ports, don't polish.

For a $3k project - don't put it all into the engine. Suspension, strut tower bars, sway bars, struts, wheels, tires, brakes. Suspension, wheel, tire, brake improvements also make a car more fun to drive. Also, you I would suggest you consider re-bushing the suspension with polyurethane bushings. Replace exhaust hangers with polyurethane type with doing the exhaust system.

BTW - how many miles on the short block? What about clutch and pressure plate?

just rolled over 11000 miles on the original block as for the clutch its original oem one, as for as the wheels and tyres go atm its only got 185/60/14s on what would be the optimum size as theres a not a great deal of clearance at full lock?

thanks had a look through the post as mentioned above Ive got a few ideas Il update and post some pics in the next few days
