does the exhaust 5th cyl 'fire'? i dont see how just shoving exhaust in there would really do anything... maybe 1 or 2 hp result.

he's asking if the 3rd (middle cylinder) has its own spark plug.

i would assume it might, to attempt to get a bit more combustion out of the unburnt fuel.
but, being based off of diesel, it might just combust on its own due to temp/force. im no diesel expert having never owned rarely driven anything with one in it, but i remember them not actually having a fire source except for start up. even then its more of a heater than a fire.

glow plugs for start up, then just pressure combustion after that

I thought it might, but from watching this it seems to be a completely passive cylinder
it just captures the still expanding exhaust gas to make a bit more use of it... I'm with you on not thinking there can't possibly be much power there I dunno

so its pretty much a 2 cyl with a passive radiator... odd

I guess you could call it a 5 stroke... most of the alternative power generation systems we played with creating in school worked with capturing the waste heat energy from a fuel driven engine and then using it to power yet another engine for additional work output. This is the same thing- just a two stage power generator using the heat from the first stage (4 stroke Otto cycle 2 cylinder) to power the second stage engine (exhaust expansion chamber). It looks like it could work well enough with high enough exhaust temperatures coming out of the first stage (assisted by the turbo), but balancing that whole mess must be fun.

I'd like to see one in person and tinker with it.

What an idea, seems to me like the middle cylinder wouldn't be providing much help though i see the idea of using it to "pull" the gasses out of the other cylinders.

Also to answer the ignition question. From what i gathered from the animation is that the middle cylinder is only an air pump.

No, with proper sizing and exhaust temperature from the first two cylinders, it's not going to "pull" the gases out, it'll still convert the heat energy from the exhaust into work.
