Anyone start anything yet? it's been colder than usual here and still snow on the ground, so i'm holding off a few more weeks before starting anything. Got some new seeds on order from Baker Creek www.rareseeds.com

I need to do something with my grapes too. I have 'em propped up on my fence line, but i'm thinking that was a mistake and need to move them to their own trellis before thy get too big.

I talked to a guy who has a large commercial growing green house. He said that they are still waiting to plant some of their crops due to this cold weather.
I am probably going to plant a few things in a bucket due to my lease on my apt being up in July and we are unsure if we are staying.

wife already has tomato plants started and bought some small blueberry bushes that will be planted soon. will be renting the tiller in the next week or so to get the ground ready, then shes going to start whatever other stuff shes planning.

Ill prally just start my usual herbs again this year. I only grow about a half dozen different things. Mainly the stuff I use for BBQing.

I am probably going to plant seeds in two weeks while I am at home recovering from the hip surgery. If all else fails I will throw them in the greenhouse at school.

I started my starters today... tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, cabbage, leeks, some cukes (so they are staggered in the season.. will direct sow more seeds).

I have another round of seeds coming in the mail... should be here in a day or two from http://rareseeds.com

I also ordered a grafted 4-in-1 apple tree
http://www.fast-growing-trees.com/4-in-1-apple-tree.htm
so it's self-pollinating and i don't have to plant 2 trees (don't really have room). Still not sure where I'm going to put this in the yard.

Also ordered their 100 strawberry plant deal. Don't have room for 100 of those either... lol going to give a lot away to family.
http://www.fast-growing-trees.com/Everbearing-Strawberries.htm

Planning to make a little baricaded area for them so they don't take over the world.

I've been looking into my grape vine VS fence problem too, looking at what pro-wineries do for their grapes. I think i'm going to continue to use the cahinlink fence, but un-twine it from the chainlink it self. the stems in time shouldn't be weaved in there. Idea is to go up, and then T out either way. I think i screwed up by planting too close to each other. There's science articles about vine placement... its nuts. Wine-o's i guess... I'm just going to get some rows parelle to my fence out, which is actually north, so i'll be fighting the sun's pull. I might just give up on these plants and get new ones and plant them in a better place next year. Learning...

B have you been up to Comstock in Wethersfield they have a large selection of good seeds.

I gotta start my raised beds this year. I'm definitely doing strawberries so I think I'm going to order from that link you posted. Will probably build a deck planter for those as they're very decorative in my opinion. Also need cukes, peppers and tomatoes (plum and cherry). Don't have time to start from seeds, will probably head to a farmers market unless you have extra's ;)

wonder how they accomplish such claims without GMO.

They use grafting. Basically, let the various seedligs 'grow' into each other. They are not hybrid plants.. just 4 of them grown into each other.

also not GMO:

yes, may times.
rareseeds is actually the 'parent' company, baker creek, of C&F.

it's just easier to order online... there's too many seeds in that store to find things in any timely fashion. lol

I am out of starting soil... planning to do another round this weeked if I have time. I can throw in a few extra. I don't have any plum seeds.. used them all up last year. Not planning to grow ay this year. Cherry, I have tommy toes. http://www.rareseeds.com/tommy-toe-tomato/?F_Keyword=tommy

ordered some of those strawberries from the site you posted b, got them today.
if my wifes grandmother hadnt been at our house today we would never have understood wtf we were looking at lol.
we went halfsies on an order of 100 with the inlaws. have 25 of them planted, no clue where we are going to put the other 25.

Nice man.

Yeah, I ordered the 100 lot too.

I planted about 30 in my garden... planted about 15 in 2 planters (another 30) which I gave to my sister and parents and gave about 40 away to the neighbor (guy who tapped my trees for syrup, which by the way, I have a jug of and it's awesome!).

I figured, i'd only use 50... but its the same price basically to get 100 so might as well and share the wealth a little bit.

I have to update this thread with more pics... I have 2 apple trees in now (5 varieties, 1 is a 4-graft, 1 is a granny smith) and my cold crops are in (spinach, kale, rhubarb, etc) re-did my grape vines (pruned the hell out of them!) and my indoor stuff is going well. Need to do another round of indoor starters this weekend for my 5-6-week out stuff.

I've been working outside a bit the past few weeks getting everything going.

Have 2 herb buckets with everything from parsley to oregano to chives to lemongrass to basil to cilantro and a few others i can't think of right now. WAY over-sededed these... will need to thin out as more come up.

meyer lemon and key lime trees. will take these inside in the winter as they will die up here. not expecting too much out of these, but they were cheap enough so what the hell.
the lady uses a ton of lime and lemon so if these get a few fruits, it's a good deal.

you can also see the hangers where the herbs will be on the deck rail there once it's warmer out at night (still hitting 40s) and the herbs are taller.

This is a 3-in-1 apricot, plum, and nectarine tree, also self-pollinating. need to mulch it up.

The remaining space will be for the cukes, peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, broccoli, summer squash, and a few bush green/wax beans. I'm going to throw a few pumpkins and a few watermelon plants in if i can as well.

I need more land :/

Nice garden, I really wish I could have one this year.

Some houses I have been looking at have 1-2.5 acres but they all seem to be short sales in my price range. I would have a huge garden.

so far, our garden is a bust.
plenty of stuff growing, and growing well, but the birds and bugs get to it first. need to find a good cheap, natural insecticide or something.

and the weeds. good god the weeds. didnt do a good enough job on killing them before planting stuff. now they rule the beds. going to completely cover the beds in plastic over the winter time to kill everything off before next spring. its all an annoying learning experience.
