I have two civics at the house. One 2002 with the D17A2 that has been wrecked (major unibody/frame damage.) The other is a 1996 coupe with engine damage. The family is in need of another daily driver and I'm wondering about the feasibility of swapping in the newer engine.

Conditions that make this more interesting.
The D17A2 is coming off of an automatic transmission.
The 96 coupe has a 5speed manual transmission in it.

The cars are sitting 20 feet from each other, so I can safely assume that any other parts that need to come from the donor should be readily available.

So, bottom line, is this doable? Like I mentioned, we just need a DD, so things like AC would be nice but not necessary. Getting to work is infinitely more important.

Thanks,

Kick

IMO, the amount of work and money needed to pull this off isn't worth it. They are not direct swaps.

you'll spend more money on mounts and wiring and stuff to get it in there than if you just bought a junkyard/'/craigslist d16y8 from a similar model year civic ex (96-98). You aren't doing it for power... And even then, it's only a couple more ponies...

IMO, pull the 17a2, sell it for a couple hundred if you can... (they aren't in very high demand)
junk/scrap the damaged car
use funds to buy y8 from crashed/swapped 96-98 ex donor car
Thank me for saving you hours of headaches :)

This is what I needed to hear, not exactly what I wanted to hear but I cannot complain. Thank you for the quick and concise answer.

If the 17A2's are in as low demand as you've hinted, I'll probably end up scrapping the entire car.

Thanks for your help!

it can't hurt to try Craigslist for a few days... the yard will maybe give you $50 for the car anyway, so you might as well try to part out what you can

around here a 17a2 just went for 100 bucks on CL with 80k and then they sold the trans for $150.... so together ya can make enough to buy a motor replacement for the 96-98
