Scooped this bad boy up for $700 tonight, 148,439 miles, ac and power steering work, was red and has been repainted metallic gunmetal, paint cleaned up pretty nice and the old alloy wheels cleaned up decent, even the interior is SUPER minty (needs cleaned up) , uncracked dash, everything works, seats are in nice shape, its fun to drive and reminds me of my old 87 , the d16a1 is super healthy, im going to install my dohc ZC cams ASAP ! I do wish it was obd0 instead of pre-obd though , I will take better pictures tomorrow , I already feel way more at home driving it than the 96, I guess I do not feel comfortable in a honda unless its +25 years old lol

need day photos from some sort of megapixel phone.

speaking of, do you need a cheap AT&T iPhone? i can hook you up.

Day 1 , installing zc head and cams (had chipped valve on cylinder 1)

ZC Head/cams installed, trimmed stock a1 lower timing cover plastic to line up with the blacktop head, all I should have to do in the am is plug up electronics, change/bleed oil/coolant, and fire it up, pics when I get home

and if anyone is wondering why the valvecover is bright, it is a polished valve cover my brother did, im putting my metallic red one off my other engine on it tomorrow , and ive also got a header and intake to go on it from my other engine also

From what can be seen of the head picture, the short block is worn out. Doing top end performance work on a worn out bottom end is pissing in the wind...

The way the thread reads is "I drove home a '86 in decent condition and pulled the head - LO and behold there was a chipped valve". As farked up as the valve is there ain't no way the cylinder fired which means it would have been limping along on 3 of 4 cylinders....burned out cat, the whole thing....

My vote - it's a $700 pile of shit ready for the crusher.

Ive got another complete a1/zc hybrid motor in my garage if this one shits lol getting the timing right is pissing me off, with the browntop dizzy I have to advance it passed the bolt holes to run correctly, I bought the car and it had a misfire on cyl 1, did compression test, 160 across the board accept for cylinder 1 was 60, pulled head and boom chipped valve, its all together and running now, like I said just dist time is fubar, prob have to advance intake cam a tooth or 2 (zc cams with a1 gears) , calling it a night on it today, more pics later

I think mine took a TD-55 distributor. Well, that was for OBD-1 anyways. No idea what that thing should have on it.

Pulleys not gears, pulleys. That's a lot of advance on the cam(s). Make sure you have it referenced to TDC correctly.

yes ALOT OF ADVANCE, if I use the a1 cam gear timing marks and the crank timing mark it runs like this, I was reading a forum and it says to not pay attention to the cam marks to only go by the down pins on the #1 cam caps that the timing marks WILL BE OFF, its kind of ticking me off

looks like I need to reset timing by dowl pins and make new timing marks

The good news is the valves are near closed at TDC so you would have to be way the Phuk off to collide it.

Yeah, when I built the ZC I used some custom adjustable pulleys that I put index marks on from the OEM stock pulleys. Still ended up cranking on them quite a bit to get things right. Stock cams, head milled but only about 0.035" (10.5:1) or so as I recall. What I'm saying is it took more tweaking than I would have guessed to get the cam timing right.

I got frustrated and called it a day, first thing in am im headed to the shop to reset the timing using the dowel pins in the cam cap and the cams like a b18, hopefully will be driving again tomorrow, hopefully the old bottom end will take the shaved head and bigger cams

and it runs ! reset the timing, retarded the exhast cam 1 tooth (info from redpepper racing forum) and it fired right up and ran great ! picking up intake, hood bra, and header on thursday, had to take a hoodless pic haha
