Hey guys and gals. So I'm sure I'm going to get a ton of flack for this but I have looked for a few hours now and haven't found a good guide for this swap yet. There are a lot of conflicting threads and posts so I figured if just save some time and ask. So here's the skinny, I have a 1991 dx hatch rolling shell. It still has the cabin harness but no engine harness. I also have a full b16a2 swap from a 99 si with it's harness and a p72. So my question here is what is the easiest way to get this thing to run? Should I buy another harness and ecu to convert the engine to obd0 or should I try to go to 0bd1? If you all could enlighten me and possibly even throw me a bone with a link to the conversion guides it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

you're going to need a b-series cable tranny or convert your car to hydrolic
ef to b-series mounts, and depending on what you do with the tranny, maybe a different tranny mount
engine obd2 to obd1 conversion by means of replacing the elctronics with obd1 parts (alt, dist, injectors)
ecu to obd1 conversion harness on top of dpfi to mpfi conversion
and you should get a p30 instead of a p72, as that's from a gsr and will not be ideal and will look for IAB that your intake manifold doesn't have.

expensive extra parts and wiring is always a PITA.

IMO, i would try to sell the a2 and get an SiR obd0 b16a changeover instead. it will be WAY easier, make the same power too, and you'll probably make a small profit on it as well since the newer engine is worth more instead of rack up 2 grand in misc parts to get it to work

I only paid 1400 for the whole swap which included axles, ecu, engine harness, long block, tranny and header

That's pretty cheap. unless you live in Kentucky or something, you could probably swing it for a decent profit. but like B said, you need some parts here and there to make it work. he outlined it pretty well.

1400 is pretty good...

but the ecu won't work, the harness is going to get hacked pieces to make it work, the tranny won't work, and the header won't bolt up to your exahust either... and you still need to get alternator, injectors and distributor to match the new ecu

you'll spend at least another 1500 on harnesses and sourcing misc stuff to get it to work. 3k.

or, you can sell it for 1500, make 100 bucks, and swap in the sir 1 with a lot less headache.

Hey guys, seeing as you were so effective at answering that question I am hoping you will be able to answer mine too which I think is probably very elementary to you.

I swapped my 93 hatch DX crap engine to a b16a2 (automatic) that came from a 93-95 del sol vtech or a JDM civic. I believe it is OBD1. That was years ago. My transmission has now died, if I come to a stop it cant get back into 2nd, just spins. My plan is to buy a new transmission on eBay and then hire a mobile mechanic to come install it. My question is do I have to find a transmission from that exact engine, or are there a few options, or is it pretty much any B series will work? Ive been trying to research and so far Im thinking theyre all interchangeable but I need to be sure before I buy one. For example, most on ebay when searching "b16a automatic transmission" are from 94-97 Acura and they have "b16a" in the listing but nothing directly saying they directly work on a b16a.

If any of you know the answer to that question or even better if you had a quick minute and wanted to recommend a specific one of the eBay ones (there are only like 5 choices right now) I would be very grateful. Thanks!

Not a ton of info on automatic swaps out there... not a popular thing to do.
There are 0 us models of b16a's that are automatic. there are some jdm ones but they are probably pretty rare. M24A rings a bell for the model code. try to score one of those if you can.

i don't think you can use the integra one, i hear it's too big but can't be certain of it. There's also some issues with the tcm in the ecu not working with the electronics for shifting inside the tranny.

Have you considered converting to manual?

Another option is to have it rebuilt at a transmission shop. it will run you some money, but so will a rare transmission, but you KNOW it will work in your car.

Thanks.

I found a M24A at eBay here. Its from the 92-95 del sol but the D series engine ones, not the b16a2 ones. Im feeling like that one is less likely to work.

Heres a followup question, say if my transmission says "S4XA" followed by some number on it on the little sticker, and I find another one that also has "S4XA" is that the model number and guaranteed to work no matter what honda/acrua engine / car it came from or are there other considerations beyond the model like the ECU issue you mentioned?

Ill check around tomorrow about rebuilding, what do you think the cost range should be? It looks like if I can buy one itll only be around $300.

the d-series will not work with a b-series motor.

no, the numbers are not reliable. There's several variations of the same things some times.

Servicing it will be more expensive than a replacement, I'm sure. But it will be 'as new' at that point.
300 gets you the unit, but you're going to have labor to put it in too don't forget if you're going to have a shop do it.
