So the wife is interested in a new car. She's interested int eh Roque, Rav4 Cr-V, Mazda CX, Ford Escape etc.. They all seem to have exactly the same or nearly identical options.

So now I get to have some fun and play the dealer roulette game. The how low of a price can I get the dealer to give me or I walk out and not buy your car game. we haven't purchase a new to 1yr old <12,000 mi vehicle in about 12yrs.

So has the game changed much?
Any tips on haggling?
How much under a researched price should I start with etc..

Any helpful info to make me dangerous would be appreciated.

The rogue is a POS. at least the last generation was. Not sure on the new redesign (which is huge now- it's like Maurano size) 2 guys at work have the old ones. awful riding vehicles and they always have stupid problems with them.

Are you trading in a car? I often find the best way to haggle is to pay near sticker, but haggle on the trade-in. If you're not trading in a car, obviously this doesn't work.

CX-5, CRV or Rav4 are the bee's knee's. CX-5 drives more like a car and is sporty, etc but has less room. CRV is pretty big. Rav4 is probably the slowest feeling and all but a toyota and will have the highest resale value in 10 years.

Haggling wise, we do our own research, learn the options and go in knowing what people are paying for the car on truecar.com. Then figure out what your car you're trading in, how much you want for it. Also get the financing squared away or know of the specials they're offering. Some dealer financing is obsurdly cheap right now. That way all you're looking for is the car you want. They'll give you a bunch of figures but if you have a number in your head don't budge. They'll beat it.

When we bought the bmw they didn't give us much for our trade in but gave us a lot more off the sticker on the car so we were OK with it. Hit our payment, terms, etc so it was pretty uneventful. 30 minutes of numbers and we left with a new car.

My Wife has had three Rogues and she absolutely loves them. Never had any problems with one. She has leased an 2008, 2010 an finally bought a 2013. Her parents have a 2014 Rogue and they love it. They did have a sunroof problem but they knew that going into it and it was fixed a week or so later after they bought it.

Not considering the new Honda HR-V in that mix?

Anyways the price of the car is easy these days, Truecar.com will give you what you should pay. You build the car you want on Truecar, print out price guarantee and bring it to the dealership and the hassle of haggling is gone.

I just built a 2015 AWD Rogue SV with Premium package on Truecar, The average person paid $28,494. Truecar price guarantee is $26,548. Bam done. Even gives your estimated payments, like this one is $326/m with $4800 down for 72 months at 2.50% APR, or lease for 179/m with $4800 down for 36 months.

i used truecar to pick up my '14 VT with 5 miles on it. they trucked it in from another dealer. that was over a year and a half ago, though. i remember the first image they show with the dealer / invoice pricing.

after knowing what some folks paid for a base VT after TTR... i'm really glad i got a killer deal.

and i'm still super happy with it.

Invoice price is the biggest sham in car sales. It's not what the dealer pays, even if they tell you that.

because america is stupid and has to have cars TODAY, we don't have the option of buying factory direct. if people were willing to wait, they could buy directly from the manufacturer (like tesla) and get a better deal on them. large car dealerships are a fucking racket. lol

We did stop in at a local dealer and test drive the Rogue. Sit down talk a little bit of numbers (my mistake is we mentioned the that we were looking to replace our 03 civic) We asked for a price I specifically said no trade in in but they ignored that and was giving Car Price $33500, trade in -$3500, Car Price $30000.

Now this drop in to the dealer was kinda on a whim hey lets go test drive a car so I really had no idea what the Rogue sells for. So I have now used Truecar and the dealer we were at has a Truecar price of $30,955. I just don't get why they would even bother to give me a bullshit quote when hey know the internet exists and people are going to use it for price data.

So far Truecar has offered some insight but I don't think it's 100% transparent pricing.

Looks like you are going all out Rogue SL Fully loaded. nice. Believe it or not people still don't do any research and by on a whim. They still fall for the "how much do you want you payment to be, $360? ok we got you close $372 a month." Than later you find out it's for 84 months when you are all excited about the car and paying right around where you wanted to be.

When I walk into a dealer, I simply say, here is the car I want, I'm not interested in driving it, I want it these terms at this price at this payment and if you can't make it work , the next dealer will. If you can, I will drive it. That's pretty much how I ended up with my BMW after Lexus, Audi and Lincoln wouldn't give me what I wanted which was to pay off my truck for what I owed. I refused to roll negative equity in my payment so they could make a fucking killing off my practically brand new Nissan Titan.

Yem, if you're looking at Toyota let me know. I'll hook you up with my guy at Hoffman in Avon. He came highly recommended from my buddy who's a long time employee there. I bought my '14 Tundra from him, emailed him what I wanted to pay, what I wanted for my trade in and what % for financing I'd accept. I literally saved about $8k with what I said I wanted to pay from sticker. There was no haggling. He just said okay, when can you come in and sign.

I did my homework beforehand and couldn't be happier. My wife is looking at the 4runner when her lease is up and I'm not going anywhere else.

Yeah we bought the Rogue SL (this thing does everything but drive itself) I spent a solid 2weeks researching. Finally came up with what I believed would be a fair offer. It also helped that a local dealer had a cars.com listing for the trim level we were intereested in that was alot lower than the truecar certificate.

It went pretty well. We walked into the dealer. Fellow came over asked us "If anyone was helping us today" Sat down told him what vehicle model etc.. we were interested in. He starts by saying " the price of the Rogue is $33,750 w/ the options and accessories we want" and at that point I took complete control of the situation. I said look I can go down to Napoli Nissan in Milford which is asking $28,185. Told him , no trade in. and we were interested in the Nissan Cash back and 0% 60mo financing offer. He asked what kind of payment we were looking for, so I gave an unrealistic value of $200/mo.

He does the typical I need to check with my manager. Comes back and says the only way Napoli can be offering that price is w/ the Nissan Cash back (I knew going into this that the price of the vehicle on Napoli's listing included the Cash back offer) and Recent college grad rebates. So he says the best they could do for the car price was $28,849. Which honestly is a good deal compared to everything I researched. Now I say I want to trade in the 03' Civic which needs some work which I didn't want to do for a private sale. He asked what I wanted. So I said" $3100 since you previously offered $3500 last time we asked for a quote" They offered $2K for the civic. I wanted $2.2K but it was close enough for the condition the car is in and from my research this was acceptable. Then my wife says well they only have the car in Silver. I want it in Gun Metallic. So they agreed to the price and to locate the color with the same options we negotiated for.

Long story short. Out the door with Tax,title, reg, and the dealer's fee was $28,817. It's amazing what a little research can save you.

nice man, good work. Again, my Wife loves her Rogue, her 3rd one. I wish we waited one year on getting hers because I really like the 2014 design, hers is a 2013 which I can't stand especially with that god awful Teal color.

Curious to see what you'll get for MPG's, she only gets 22. The 15's are supposed to be around 28 combined.

off-topic: I just spent 4 days in Ireland driving around the Nissan Qashqai. It was a fun little car. Nothing amazing, but I did enjoy the turbo diesel engine that it came with. RHD manual was fun to drive around the countryside.
