a b20 VTEC is one of the most solid powerplants you can produce out of a b-series engine. loads of displacement paired with the proper breathing head and you have yourself a monster.
the only problem is that the b20 bottom end will need some attention before being able to satisfy the VTEC head's rev happy powerband.
the stock rod bolts on the b20 are known to be prone to failure. replace those with some arp bolts, get the bottom end balanced, and you're good to go.
the other option here is an H22 swap, which will put you at about 200 crank hp and 161 lb ft of tq. the h22 swap, though more tricky than a b-series swap, is well worth it IMO.
companies like hasport and avid have made it easy to do the h swap into the civic chassis. you could also go H2B which is an H engine with a b series tranny.
i would stay away from anything other than these two swaps, especially if youre just getting back into it.
k swaps are just far too expensive.
j swaps are fairly inexpensive but have an ugly ass result. no hoods have been made to clear the intake manifold yet.
anything RWD is going to have to be 100% custom fab work and is going to be way more costly than is worth it.
