I need to hear from people down south about the ins and outs of living in North Carolina. Things like prices and things are nice to know, but I wanna know what it's like to live there.

I can understand that I can find a rust free car for pennies, that i'll never need to worry about rust again, and that houses are half the price as they are up here in CT. But leaving CT I'll miss out on track events (autocrosses at the least... do you have any cool road courses down there?) What are the roads like (Are they all straight criss cross roads patchworking across the plains?) and what the mountains are like.

This offer will take me into Charlotte, and I think I can adjust it to make a reasonable opportunity out of it. But if I had to pick an area I would prefer living in the Smokey mountains. Near there is Winston Salem, and not much else (Which I can dig). I wanna get back into nature things like the continuous hiking / camping / 4 wheeling that I used to do. I can guess that there is no snow, which I'll miss but I can come back to CT at any time for a week or so because I can work in either place.


Is there any mountainous or deep country area between Charlotte and Raleigh ?

NC People ... Sound off !
 
Great thread for you to start, i also just got an offer to go work for a company in the Charlotte area.

So not to thread jack but anyones input would be great.

I lived in Augusta, which is on the SC border.

The humidity was brutal becasue its in a valley. Honestly, there were days where I wouldn't go outside until at least 6pm...


I came back mainly becasue I grew up here and everyone I knew was here. Chalked it up to a life experience :)


NC, from what I saw, was nice...the scenery anyway
 
I lived in Cary, NC (suburb surrounding Raleigh) for about six year, so I can't really tell you about life in the mountains. However, the weather was perfect. Winters were usually around 40-50 degrees, and hardly ever any snow, while summers tend to be 90-100 degrees with pretty high humidity.

The landscape is not anything like the plains, very mountainous and hilly. My driveway was practically at about a 60 degree angle.

Traffic was never a problem, barley any crime (in the top 10 of safest cities), night life was very jumping, but i'm not sure about anything drag strip or autox related.

As fas as house are concerned, i'm not realy sure the prices in Ct, but my parents bought a 2900 sq/ft, 4 bedroom, 2 car garage house with a 1 acre lot in a very nice neighborhood for about $230k and sold it for near $300k in '03. Neighborhoods there are kept up and maintained very well, nothing trashy or poverty looking. I was very happy how well the city was mangaged and kept clean and had elaborately landscaped roads,etc.

Well CT is pretty flat too, I don't know what I'm getting all bent about. We have lots of hills that are pretty close together so it "feels" alittle mountainous.

How would you compare VA to NC ?
 
Colder winters, cooler summers. I didn't even own a winter/heavy jacket when I lived in NC, so the first winter up here in VA I had to fork out $100 for a decent jacket. The humidity isn't as high here as it was in NC, because it was usually between 90-99% down there. Not sure what it''s like up in CT.

MUCH less traffic, DC traffic is horrible and ridiculous, im sure CT is pretty bad too. It's a lot more flat here in VA, which I don't like. Flat is, well... boring. NC had countless great twisty, turny, steep, and diving roads I used to like taking at night in my 7. Used to be able to get my stomach to rise and fall like it does on a rollercoaster. I have yet to find a decent one here in VA, they are just not as abundant.

You could probably easily get an IT job in Raleigh because thats the center of their computer-related feilds call RTP (research triangle park). Bascially, the IT headquarters of the entire Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area. My pops is a computer engineer and got his first computer-related job there about 10 years ago for somewhere around 80k, with only a few years of expereince after he changed his field.

Overall, NC > Va
 
nah i just want the crx.

i lived just outside of atlanta, georgia for 9 months. hated it. in the summer it was 100 + high humidity. in the winter, with 1/2in of snow on the ground everything got shut down.
 
Definantly LOTS of country area between Charlotte and Raleigh. I like to go on HWY 64 from Asheboro to Raleigh for top speed runs(there are cops, but very few..you can see them from about 2-3 miles out because of the hills). The mountain areas are mainly west of Charlotte. If you live in Charlotte, thats near Rockingham which has a 1/4mile strip and a road course I believe(If it doesnt, theres some south in South Carolina). Lots of hills in Piedmont area of NC also.

Charlotte would be a good area because it's not boring, and sort of in the middle of all the popular cities. avoid Durham...

btw, Wake county(around Raleigh) just revised their inspection system; no more emissions test. Safety inspection and OBDII tests only :mrgreen: I think Mecklenberg county is doing the same thing though.

Durham is a hellhole. The Memphis of TN, the Richmond of VA, the anywhere in CA... :ph34r:
 
phoenix and or tucson is awsome :)

3 months of 100ish degree weather with sub 15% humidity, for the rest of the year beautiful. i wear shorts and at shirt at noon right now
 
If you still check this thread Cel... Get out of CT. As fast as you can. This state is garbage. The taxes are ridiculous. The cars are always beat up. The roads are crap from sand and cracks from winter freeze. And the hills are bad and you know it... Don't play it down because you don't want to leave. The only fun part is the twisty roads to test the suspension on.

As I type this, I'm afraid my fingers and toes are going to freeze off. But I won't turn up the heat for fear of heating bills. And I won't turn on the electric heater because CT keeps raising electric prices.

The only things I like about this hole are (at least where I live) the proximity to NYC and the snow in the winter.

Also... I don't know your political views... but this state is as blue as they come, and I'll be glad when my father retires and we move to Texas so I can leave all these liberal hippies and their longing for a repeat of Vietnam behind.


But that's just me. I abhor Connecticut.
 
Charlotte is really nice area. ive been down there a few times. nice roads, friendly people and a good city. there is the Lowe's Motor Speedway down there (theres a strip club just before it if i remember correctly). it gets hot as hell down there but in general it aint too bad.
 
Holy thread from the dead. Since I posted this thread the job fell through, I left them and started a great job at Yale, and I just bought a home in Ansonia.

If you're sick of CT, come on down to my house and hang out with my crew. Quality people and do lots of quality things on the weekends and weeknights . The first party at the house is a Scion meet, and I'll be setting up the new garage as well.
 
Oh yeah, and from what I've seen of North Carolina since this thread - I hate that place. Not so much to write it off as a state, but you have to work real hard to make it big in NC. In CT you have to work real hard to make your bills - making it "big" is only a slight step forward. Look at B - You make x amount of money and you can't save money. You make x + $4 an hour and you're set for life.

Good fro arthritis, haha. I love where I am though. I'm a surfer and snowboarder. I need to be fairly close to both. And if I go any further south the ski season would be like a month long. Surf season never ends with a good wet suit. I want to retire to New Zealand or Chile though. Same idea but the surfing and snowboarding are better.
