I went to Formula D saturday in Seattle (actually monroe, evergreen speedway). It will be on air on G4 september 10th. it was the best event of the season. the finals were sick. there was a great crash in the championship round. lots of great drifting. my friend mike is a member of "team menace". They are rated as a top 5 team in the nation for show cars. They aren't all trailer queens either. they have some sick cars there.

I almost got into a fight with stephen papadakis to, well not really, but there was some interesting conversation. we went by the aem garage and me and my ex/hump buddy were talking about racing. she knows quite a bit about the scene and actually pointed him out to me. i didn't see him. i think he has a 240sx sponsored by aem. but it wasn't there. he was just walking around like a retard. i wasn't really trying to start shit either. i said, "drag racing was played out 5 years ago" and i didn't think he heard me, but he did and got all butt-hurt. so i asked him about drifting and he was telling me it's the new thing. no shit stupid, that's why you aren't drag racing anymore. if you wanted to keep your job you have to keep up with what's popular. and he just got all pissed off and my ex dragged me to the next booth and told me to leave him alone. in all it was funny.

well, here's the pics.

sweet! did you meet JR Gittin?

i'm assuming you mean vaughn gittin jr.
yeah, he is hella cool. i was watching him set up the car during practice and he was telling one of his crew guys, "god damn okubo brake checked me on the first turn. if he does that shit during the competition i'm putting him into the wall."

then during the autograph session he was signing a baby onesie for some mexican dude. it was gay. some guy said,"i bet that's a first". vaughn replied, "i've signed just about everything"
I asked him, "so how does that (the baby outfit) compare to signing a nice set of D cups." he just laughed and i told him about my 240 and wished him luck. that dude is cool.

yeah, clayton and i knew him before he got famous.

then there was the infamous party at his house we went to last year :D

uh oh, you done did it now. you have to tell the story. oh yeah, we talked about how domestics are dominating this series to. a mustang/gto/viper lead in points.

no story really...we went to his house, got drunk, and had a good time. But I've had JR drive my Z, and he did as many spins as I did.... If I wouls have stuck to the AE86 or got a 240SX...I might be on the road getting in trouble...

yeah, but it's too easy to have the hindsight of something like that. i'm almost wondering if it's too late to be able to get into drifting as anything more than just a hobby. i think maybe an amateur event here and there, but as far as professional, i don't think there is going to be a lot more opportunity for people to get involved. i think the next car will be a full drift competition car. the car i have right now, i would be too mad if i put it into a wall or something. when this is doen, we'll see about a real drift car that i will actually compete with. this one if for show/fun weekend car.

yeah, its gonna be hard to get into. most of the guys with anything less than a FULL competition drift car really cant compete. God knows the work rhys did to his GTO took some serious cash. Nothing that many of us can compete with.

that's the thing though. if you get a 240sx with an sr20det, it is pretty easy to get it up to 350hp to the wheels. $2000 in suspension and another $700 for an lsd and you are set. basically less than $10,000

my issue is getting past the whole, "hey, i'm sliding around a bank at 80 mph. wtf am i doing" rationale.

the guys at the top have what they call sponsors.....enough said.

a normal 240sx for competition only needs a cage, a fire system, and a good driver. Engines, upgrades, mods, paint, flares, wheels, tires are extra.

popular quote.

"How do you make a little money in racing.....by spending a lot of money to do it."

I'm happy just playing around a few times a year, I'm not going to make it my life. Although it seems like it lately, build this, fab that, clean this up, bid for tires on Ebay, scrounge for hours on end for other parts thats a decent deal on the internet, and just try to get by with out going into the red at the bank.....and I still have nothing to show for my work over the years except a lot of spinning out. :(

its hard stuff...maintaining a 20-30...even 40 mph drift is nothing compared to maintaining an 80mph drift. The little bit i get to play in my friend's car proves that without a doubt.

I can do a 40 mph drift but i dont go for it if i feel like im losing it. I tap the foot brake and straighten my ass out. I have never spun a car (yet) but god knows ive come close a half dozen times. It will eventually happen.

I might see if i can get a couple local sponsors here for next summer. see if i can get a tire shop and a couple local import shops. nothing special, just try to get some cheap labor on the stuff i'm not able to do. here in the northwest we are a little behind. i don't know how we were able to get the formula D here, but next year things will be a lot more popular.

if you haven't spun out, you haven't gotten enough angle. you need to spin out a couple times just so you know where the limit is. that way you can push it without going too far out.

it not my s2000...id rather not spin it...if i feel like its about to go i straighten that shit out. hes not worried about tires, hes worried about me breaking the car. If it was my car and it was like an AE86 or a shitty 240, then yeah, id probably be spinning it cause i dont care if i break my shit. Your right though, i get angle but its not anymore than 40 degrees (guessing)...im happy not fucking up other people's cars.
