Just saw the report on CNN about 5 minutes ago. I guess the F-14 is officially retired as of today.

Thats pretty crazy - it always seemed like the type of dominant fighter that would be around for at least a few more years.

I guess the Navy's decision is based upon the multi-role capeability of the FA-18 Hornet, and the fact that more Hornets can fit on an Aircraft Carrier than Tomcats.

Well the tomcat has been around since the 70s, just like the F15.

The hornet and the F22 are far more capable than the F14 nowadays.

Who knows maybe they will bring it back for some reason. The A-10 was retire once or twice and it is still out there killing tanks.

the f-14 is not JUST a plane. it is the plane. i mean hell, even after tom cruise flew one, it was miraculously still the coolest thing in the sky.

nope,

the Navy is going JSF (Joint Service Fighter). Fom what I've heard it will replace both the 18 and the 14

AF is getting the JSF too, to replace its F16 inventory, the F22 is already in service, it is not a Navy bird, never will be

I was mistaking the F22 and the JSF. The JSF has the VTOL capability doesn't it? I was thinking the F22 did.

Thats my favorite plane. :) pretty much a flying machine gun.

I live about a mile and a half off the runway of the largest A-10 base in the country :) i get to hear them fly overhead all the time.

they make a beautiful noise.

i wouldnt go so far as to say f15 > > > f14....maybe just f15 > f14
