I Got my hands on this engine with the tranny. I know the best way to go is just find a civic hatch that is a si but pre 88 would be cheaper to buy. Would I be spending to much to convert the wireing? I am a noob here(see post count) but if anyone can please give me some key search words I can get started with building my project.
Thank you!

the D16A6 will not bolt into the 1st gen CRX or 3rd gen Civic without fabricating all new mounts, modifying shift linkage and getting custom made axles - also a lot of wiring and if the car you got was not the Si model, it would require swapping the entire fuel system and most of the wiring for the same from an Si car - your best bet would be to find 88 CRX HF - these are the lightest of the 88-91 CRXs and the D16A6 engine and transmission would bolt right in and connect up to all the sensors, etc. - no wiring changes would be needed - you would just use the HF engine wiring harness on the A6 engine

It is looking like the best way to go will have to be to find a DX civic in the 88-91? I have been looking for the SI But most of them are selling for 1K and up. All this time I was thinking that the 91 would bolt straight into a pre 88.

will only bolt directly into a 88 and up.

The HF would be the best fit but here in Cali they are so hard to find. I was trying to keep my project under 500.00.

you could use the CRX/Civic DX or the Civic STD (4 speed) - Civic STD is probably going to cost the least to purchase - the DX and STD models have the Dual Point Fuel Injection (DPFI) which would require converting the wiring over to the Multi Point Fuel Injection (MPFI) on the D16A6 - the CRX HF is already MPFI, so no wiring changes necessary

I have heard the term STD what does that mean? I lknow you can use a STD mani to build custom turbos from what I have read.

the STD (Standard Model) is the lowest of the line - like a DX but cheaper - had 60hp D15B1 engine and 4 speed transmission - had smaller fuel tank, smaller axles and front hubs and were very light - most didn't have a tachometer, rear wiper or passenger side exterior mirror - had no center console, just rubber boot around the shifter - easy to spot from the rear as the panel between the tail lights is just black instead of matching the lights

Thank you all for the great info. Now I can start on my search for a chassis to build on.
here in Colorado Springs, we routinely find the 88-91 Civic DX and STD models that have a smoking engine that sell for between $200-500 - having a shop and also buying and selling parts for the older Honda/Acuras, we get people coming to us all the time offering to sell them to us - most of these cars, if they have always been in Colorado, are for the most part, rust free - here is a picture of a 88 DX hatch that we bought for $400 with a bad engine and interior in not too good of shape - we swapped a DOHC ZC engine into it, put on the wheels, put a CRX dash into it along with Si seats (painted all the interior black), buffed the paint and sold it for $2500
