I just bought a 1988 CRX. I was told that it has an engine from a 1998 Civic. I have no way of verifying this right now. All I know is it has MPFI. Can someone tell me exactly how to id this engine so that I can get the right parts and the right shop manual. I am a new member and a first time CRX owner. Thanks.

to the left of the exhaust mani there is a engine code on the block. clean off the dirt and oil and post the code #. then I can help you out. If it a 98 vtec motor it should be d16y8, if non vtec d16y7

i pretty much figured out it is not a 1998 engine, but i don't know if engine is origional or a swap. help if you can.
engine code is D15B1 4615159

D15B1 is the 60hp DPFI engine from 88-91 Civic STD (4 speed) model - not a stock CRX engine

I found the info below on wikipedia. Assuming it is correct, my motor (from a 88-91 Civic) has already been upgraded to mpfi. Can I rebuild the D15B1 block and add a vtec head? If so, is there a specific vtec head to look for?

Thanks for the help guys.

D15B1
(essentially a D15B2 engine with a mild camshaft, a restrictor plate under the DPFI, and an air flow restrictor inside the DPFI unit)

While I have your attention...does anyone know where I can get a poly fuel tank to replace the leaking one on my 88 crx? Not a fuel cell to go inside, but a replacement for the stock one. Thanks
