Hi I have a d16z6 in a 88 civic LX and there is a strange wurring noise coming from the timing belt area. I listen to it with a stethoscope and it is definitely coming from the timing belt or pulleys. I had this same problem on my d16y7, but couldnt trace exactly where the noise was coming from.
at idle the noise is quiet but when giving initial throttle from idle it gets louder... then quieter the higher you rev.
I would say it can best be heard from 1000-2000 rpm

anyone have any insight on what it could be? (any common things)

Is it more of a 'whurring', or more of a 'whining', like a sqeaky belt?(alternator/air conditioning?)

I know it isnt the powersteering belt or the alternator belt. right now I do not have a upper timing cover and it can heard with a stethoscope near the timing belt. it is a whurring noise. almost like the timing belt is too tight or something like that or the belt tensioner idler pulley bearing is noisy.

Hmm... Sorry man, I can't really help ya

bearing inside ur pulley is finished? does it almost sound like a bad wheel bearing when u hear it grinding?

bearing inside what pulley? is it common for the idler pulley bearings to go? it doesnt really sound like a wheel bearing noise. but hard to tell.

Think he's referring to the Timing belt tensioner pulley. They do indeed go bad.

If thats the case, buy your self a new timing belt and tensioner pulley assembly(pulley and bearing) and just replace everything.

It shouldn't take more than a 6 hrs to do if you know exactly what your doing and know your way around the car well. If you can do an engine swap, you can change the timing belt.

Just be sure to set your motor to TDC(drop a long screwdriver in cyl. 1 and roll the motor over by hand until the Intake stroke on the #1 cyl is at it's peak), and support the motor with a jack when you pull the drivers side mount and bracket off(to remove the cover).

If you have any questions just ask. Its not fun, but I've done it before, and didn't think it's that hard, just time consuming.

yea I've done tons of timing belts on single cams. so that isnt a problem
so yea I guess I will rip it apart and replaced the tensioner pulley and timing belt.
does anyone know if its common for a waterpump to be noisy?

I'm not sure, but it would also be one of those things you'd wanna replace!
Shopping list for Ceehris: ;)

Timing belt
Timing belt tensioner pulley assembly
Wata pump

never done a water pump on a civic before. but yea I will figure it out.
I might as well find a cam gear somewhere also I guess.

It's pretty much the hardest thing you can do on the motor...

You remove the 4 bolts, put the new one on with gasket sealer stuff, and put the bolts back on.

=)

what are your thoughts on aftermarket waterpumps? do you think I should replace with aftermarket or honda?

Naa, it won't fit unfortunatly.
I just have it sitting on the floorboard, under the dash, behind the center console on the carpet
