ok im buying a non v-tec d15. my friend has a 1.6 vtec head for sale. can i buy that and put it on my 1.5 block? what is it going to take to make that owrk if it is possible. what do you recommend i do?

yah well making a long story short. you need a couple of things
- ex head(including everything)
-p28 ECU (ex)
- Belt
-gasket
-heck im not sure what else but should total up to 300-400 bucks

just use the d15b vtec engine....instead of trying to piece yours together....the jdm d15b vtec can handle 16psi on stock internals (u need to tune the set up) preferrably chrome. DONT USE FMU! that is, if u choose to boost

I say go for the head swap; much cheaper than looking for a new JDM D15B-VTEC. Performance should be about the same N/A; a Mini-Me with Z6 head and B2 block will have more compression than a regular D15B-VTEC too.

d15b vtec handle 16 psi? maybe for a year or less not daily driven. if it really can please show me the car. not bein an asshole just wanna no what they are trully capable of.

That D15BX bottom end has a crank that's probably good until about, what, 7,000 RPMs? I think, possibly, less. I thought the Z6 factory crank only spun till 7,200 RPMs before it's life was no longer guaranteed, and the Z6 block (among the A6) is one of the only good D-Series blocks around.

1.5L is your first problem. Tiny cylinders aren't going to produce you any torque, all that block is going to do for you is maybe give you a little more compression than a stock complete version of whatever your friend's head is from. Immediately, you would need to tune it, not to mention worry about stuff like piston\valve clearance, mileage, etc...

Your friend has a spare head. Do you know how he's been taking care of it? The gasket surface needs to be pristine for a good seal, for one, if he pulled it off and sat it on something dirty, hard, or unfit for the head to be sitting on, you could have problems with your swap right off of the bat. When buying used engine components, consider what kind of care they need once they've been disassembled and find out if that's the kind of care that's been taken of them since they've been away from an engine.

If you are going to do a mini-me engine, here are my base, non detailed recommendations for you:

block - head
a6 z6
a6 y8
z6 y8
d15bx y8

My favorite mini me uses an A6 bottom end and a Y8 intake manifold, as for component comparison, I believe those to are the best in their respective categories from the factory. The A1\ZC pistons are ridiculous for high compression\NA setups, A6 pistons make for more compression as well (but not as much), Z6 and Y8 pistons generally lower it, A1\ZC rods are I believe the strongest, the Z6 I think might have the best crank (I don't know the D-Series cranks as well as I'd like to).

The D15B is a great engine if you insist on a 1.5L SOHC VTEC power-plant. It's SUPPOSED to be the way it is, thus eliminating all of the Frank-issues right away. Secondly, it's factory OBD1 (schwing!) and third, it's fairly cheap. 3 Stage VTEC is also a cool factor (although, I never really quite learned what the hell that even MEANS when I was in Honda PACT, lol) if it actually DOES anything more than regular VTEC (obviously it whips vtec-e) and it's certainly nothing to even bother with comparing it to i-vtec.

IME, 1.5s are trash, just my .02

ive got a 1.5 in my mirage that might suprise you...

stage 1 ported/flowed head
stage 1 cam
stage 1 header

all from RPW.... i generate more torque than a stock LS.

I was referencing Honda D-Series 1.5Ls. They were built mostly for economy, not for power. Their parts don't rev well, nor accept too much power over stock. They just don't have the same potential as other engines, at least, not for the price.

look at F1 for example tiny little cylinders. some of these things are 3.1L V10. not alot of torque but high end like crazy. then again its F1. build ur engine, forged internals and she'll go nice.

mine is economy as well, but im making a good amount more ponies over stock with a grand in the motor and nothing done to the bottom end.

this has nothing to do with my mirage but:
im a D series ninja.

A guy with the sn crxmotorsports is making around 160-170hp in his road race D15B2 ;). Also, Bisi was making like 250whp with a D15B6 and weber carbs(his F22 is around 390whp IIRC).

The 1.5s can indeed rev; it's just their weak points is the camshaft chokes the engine at higher rpms, and the rods are weak. Replace those, it'll rev with D16s all day(hell, some people already do it with 1.5l mini-mes and A6 cam in D15Bx)..

Also, not all JDM D15B VTECs are 3-stage. The 3-stage(OBDII) one has pretty much no aftermarket camshaft option. The OBD1 D15B VTEC is pretty much D15Z1 block with Z6 head(the crankshaft, rods, and pistons are different from the Z1 though...the D15B has D16-sized rod journals and D16 rods).
