I have a 1990 Civic Si with a LS Vtec swap in it. The car is fast but has trouble stopping. I am aware of the 90-91 ex brake upgrade and I think I know all the components to use.
The question I have:
Is this the best/easiest brake upgrade for the car? or should I go a different route?

Someone please help me. I love this car and miss driving it everyday.

The EX upgrade is definitely the easiest upgrade. If you want something beefier, you can look into using the NSX / Legend caliper setup with larger rotors, or you can go to a complete bolt on kit from FastBrakes.

make sure when u change it from drum to disc u remove the valves in the brake lines which control the brake fluid pressure goin to the rear and front. on disc/drum combo the rear drum on average recieves the first 20% of braking in order for the piston to push the shoes to make contact on the drum. so if u dont change it u are gonna have very odd braking lol. but i was just curious what combos could u put on the civic 1990 dx to make it 4 disc brake? any and all combos would be great.

You do NOT want to remove the proportioning valves. That's a very bad idea. You can get one that is meant for all disc setups and use it in place of the stock prop valve.

I have no idea what you're talking about for the rear getting the first 20% of braking. That makes no sense.

Thanks for your replies. I am probably going to go with the EX brakes. I heard it has all the stopping power needed for my car. Now I just need to find one.

calesta there is a proportioning valve, a metering valve and ,a vlave for detecing leaks in the lines if u dont no what ur talking about please stfu and dont bother people with ur amature ideas. sometimes they are all in a combination valve. read up Howstuffworks "How Master Cylinders and Combination Valves Work"

I know how brakes work, and am by no means an amateur.

You can be a little less rude you know- telling an admin to shut the fuck up because I'm calling the same item a different CORRECT term (yours is right too) is not a good way to get started on a site. Got it?

The EF does not have separate valves- everything flows from the master cylinder to the proportioning valve, then to the individual wheels. If there is something that meters flow to the rear first, it's in the proportioning valve. Nothing comes after it except for the lines going straight to the wheels. Go find your non-amateur service manual and look at the brake line diagram.

Next time chill out before you call someone and amateur and start cussing them out- you both might just be talking about the same thing.

i apologize for the way i went about doing it but please before u tell me im wrong just read up on it and find out more before u go saying "i have no idea what u are talking about for the rear gettin the first 20% of braking that makes no sense". the metering and proportioning have 2 different functions but are very similar. metering only found in disc/drum setups. while proportioning are found in all setups. it allows u to have less braking force in the back because of the effects of inhertia working on the car while metering allows the back brakes(drum only) to activate sooner so the front and back can work together at the same time.

Cal knows what he's talking about, so I suggest you listen more. Closed minds don't do well in the long run.

Werd, Id watch yourself...giving bad advice is one thing, bashing someone for giving the right advice where you have failed is something completely different.

HAND! :)

lol oh man im rigth hes wrong period. u dont wanna read up on the website i gave u not my problem. and lastly the proportioning valve and metering valve ARE 2 DIFFERENT VALVES! if u do not know this and forget to remove the valve u will be having back brake lock up all the time with a 4 disc conversion. a bunch of mods ganging up on me saying im wrong when in fact im right is just weird.....

look, im tired of arguing, the people with real information on this topic still have the ability to post. unfortunately, you just took it away from the creator.

on an EF CIVIC (not on all cars) there is ONLY a proportioning valve. NOTHING ELSE. It is the only thing in line from the master cylinder to each caliper/drum.

this discussion is over.

to the post starter, all the options calesta listed are viable, but the 90 and 91 EX brakes are the cheapest and easiest options
