a little help with crank pulley

this may sound goofy, but how do you guys remove/install the crank pulley bolt without the crank turning on you without using a impact gun

well i used a flat head screw driver to hold the fly wheel wile i undone the pully with my free hand

at the moment its on the floor, its a bare block with just the crank, oil pump, main caps, and crank pulley installed

I had to use a special tool that held the pulley. It was a pain in the ass.

a friend of mines stuck a hammer handle wrapped in a towel between one of the rod journals and the block and loosed it with a 5 foot pole for leverage, it worked but the crank broke his hammer suprisingly the rod journal didnt get damaged in any way at all

Ditto on the Flywheel

I'm very much a novice at engine work. I popped the starter off, had a friend hold a large flathead screwdriver against the flywheel, and used a 17mm socket and breaker bar with 2 ft extension to loosen the crankshaft bolt. Saved me $45 for the special tool (harmonic dampener). Took no time.

I just pulled one off on friday, got a big screwdriver shoved it in the hole of the balancer and cranked it with a 3 foot cheater pipe and it broke right loose. that worked for me.

How'd you hold the short block to the ground?

it was still attached to a junk car, forgot to mention that. It wasn't as hard to break though as I read on here. It was farely quite easy.

I'd say just get the tool, or take the block to a shop and have them use an impact gun. Or get it on an engine stand, and try bolting a bar or something to the flywheel mating surface so the bar will catch the engine mount spots, and hold the crank in place. Those are my suggestions. You may need to buy a bar, and drill a couple of holes in it, but if you can't get the block to the shop, that might be your cheapest bet. OR maybe a super duper strap wrench on the pulley. You might try that.

somebody assure me that this bolt is conventionally threaded. someone posted the torque value then talked about engine motion making it tighter. the flywheel turns counter clockwise when looking at it so engine motion would loosen it if anything. torque value around 168 ft# on my h22a

I just did my first Honda timing belt on a B16 motor. Bought the crank holding tool off of ebay for $26 plust $7 shipping. Taking the bolt out was a piece of cake, took two minutes, definitely the way to go. In addition to the tool it required a deep 19 mm (3/4) socket, a 1/2" breaker bar and a regular 1/2" rachet handle. Every other way people talk about holding the engine puts you at risk for busting something. I'd say buy or borrow the tool

Here's the order information for the pullet removal tool. It was a tight fit between the pulley and the inner fender but on my car if you turned it just the right way it would slip in.

I got the bolt out but how do you get the pulley off the crank of an Acura TL?
