I don't own a Honda, but I am sure you guys know your stuff. I am planing a project, its a light mid engine car and I need your opinion as to the best engine performance wise. It needs to be OBD-1, a 4 cylinder and a manual transmission. Engines which are not modified just out of the box stock. Can you help me choose an engine, and its for street driving.
 
The h22 and the b18c both make pretty decent horsepower and torque in stock form, and are both available as obd1.

I used EBAY as a reference for price/price differences. It seems the h22 is cheaper, is there a reason? or why is the b18c more? I put( did the project my self ) a larger engine in my 914 and I want to build another mid-engine car and am going to use a Fiat X19 as a base. I would like around 170 to 200 hp and a 5 speed. I see some on EBAY but I wont go there for one, the b18c seems to be more expensive. Why is that? I am putting this engine and 5 speed in a Fiat X19, I built this car in the link below, it runs nice so I think a Honda engine would be perfect for the X19.

The only reason why the h22 is more expensive than any b series swap is because it is usually more work and expense to make it work. It is not the hardest swap in the world but is definetly more work than b series swaps into most platforms. It is not in demand even close to the b series, thence forth your price difference. But if your doing something as involved as it sounds you are, go with the h series it sounds like you can handle it!! Good luck.;)

the forever ongoing arguement, I can't say for sure cause I haven't measured them myself, but theirs a writeup on HT, supposedly with just the shortblocks weighed the H is 35lbs heavier than the B
 
Ok, neither the b18 nor the h22 will be a good choice. The only 4 cyl Honda engine you can use for a Mid Engine RWD car is the engine from the S2000 (F20C I believe). It's the only one with a transmission for RWD. Come on guys, we're supposed to know our stuff.
 
F20C won't work because it's designed for a longitude setup(engine will be next to you, transmission/shifter behind you, and no driveshaft; because the differential is right there)..
FWD transmission WILL work because the engine is still in the same position(the mid-engine Integra and Del-Sol were created by welding in the front of another Honda where the rear wheel is, with linkages to replace the steering rack...shifting was taken care of by use of the stock Prelude/Accord/RSX. etc cable shift linkage)

K20/K24s will work, and will probably make the most power. There are some K20/K24 Lotus Elise/Exige's rolling around too, those things are able to keep up with Porches and Ferraris.

I don't follow you? Sure the shift linkage will need to be a cable system, the exhaust may need to run under the engine, not sure there. The Honda doesn't know its FWD? It just does what its designed to do propel the half shafts etc.
 
He was quoting the guy above. With the K-series, the exhaust would already be pointed towards the back of the car.

Those are Rear engine cars, not a true midship mounted engine. Did you watch the you-tube vids? That is a true mid engine car. If he can fit a Ford V8 in a porsche, the F20C should be a cakewalk. Sure, the trans will be right at the rear differential, but that's how all mid engine cars are setup. I still say F20C is the only 4 cylinder honda engine that will work for a MID-ENGINE car.

I was under the impression that he wanted a RMR setup. I guess the transverse engine would still technically be a RMR, but the engine is so close to the rear wheel centerline that it virtually negates the benefits of RMR and IMO is more like a RR setup. The F20C would give better weight distribution and be more like what he has done before.


You'll get no disagreement from me concerning mid and rear engine. I thinks its in its own category. Not like my V8 car and not like a Porsche 911. My X19 is set up just like the Honda would be. BTW, that exhaust pictured is incredible!
 
Dude you're confusing rear engine with mid engine. mid engine=engine between the front and rear wheels. rear engine=engine on top of the rear wheels. the MR2/MRS, NSX, and Lotus Elise are mid-engine cars, and they all use transverse engines. Hell, I even posted a PIC of a mid-engine Lotus with a K20A. Putting the FWD chassis in the rear will NOT make it rear-engine, because our FWD already have the engine shifted towards the front to put more weight on the drive wheels.

The Porsche, Ferrari's, VW Bugs, and Lamborghini's are rear-engine, that's why their engine is placed differently. If you want to talk about V8s, there's a guy that put a Northstar V8 in his MR2. The Northstar V8 is from a FWD Cadillac, transverse setup.
