God i really do feel like a noob, but i just can't figure it out myself.

anyways, i know a guy selling a gsr swap, legit, 80k miles for $1600. I'm also pondering just boosting the sohc vtec. this is for a daily driver that needs more pep. anyways, they both come out to about $2000 after all is said and done. so here is what i've already been thinking about.

1)d series will give me more power and probably more fuel efficient than the tuned gsr.

2)the gsr is more reliable

3)the gsr will be less maintenence.

4)i'm in a low theft area so i'm not really a target.

5)if i blow the d series, it's cheap to replace

6)d series will be easier to keep sissy stuff like ac/ps and all that.

am i missing anything?

i would boost the d, i'm thinking about selling my lsvtec and building my d series.

buy good parts, give it plenty of fuel and you know the rest.

GSR swap better for daily driver and less maintenance. but save your D-series incase you blow the GSR. I still have my D16Z6. LS/VTEC pain to maintain

I had the same delima. I bought a turbo kit for my d16z6 but after reading and getting some unexpected money I went and bought a b18c swap from Hmotors. I figure I will put the b18 in the car now and build the D for boost and put the turbo on there and hopefully find a cheap shell to put it in. Why make money if you cant enjoy it.

Why does everyone say boost the D, that is always the answer for you cheap bastards:p. Anyways, boosting the d is faster but not cheaper than a swap. Once you have a swap you can wait a while and boost your b series which is much faster than any D series turbo. I have seen boosted D series get beat by stock swapped hatches too many times. Once you are B you have a suitable platform for a future turbo. A turbo B series is more expensive but has so much more potential than any D.

b series wont get boosted. its either b with i/h/e or a boosted d.

WTF are you smoking?

People say D-series cant touch a B untill they get spanked by one. And the D series motors can be suitable platforms!. And like I previously stated it lays down better torque numbers than a B. Torque is just as important as horse power. You could semi-build the D and junkyard(yes, cheap bastards) turbo the D for less than a B swap and put up som pretty impresive numbers.

Boosted D FTW

You can make impressive numbers on any motor in any car. Put together a junkyard turbo kit for a ford escort and it will make "descent" numbers. The problem is the performance ceiling on a d series engine is much lower and the point where you need to seriously modify the engine to gain any more power comes very quikly. With a b series you can go as far as you want to go and make far better than "descent" numbers. D is cheap and will make good power faster but the B series is in for the long hall and in the end you spend less money for much more power.

ahh yes but it is torque that moves mass, not horse power... granted they are directly related. but in my opinion, go for the boosted d... less money, more torque. that boosted d series will walk all over a b series with I/H/E. i have a boosted d16z6 that puts out 400 hp and 370 tq. a b series, at the same hp number, would only be at 290 to 310 tq. not to mention it costs a lot more to boost a b series. i know you aren't boosting the b series if you get it.

my opinion:
boost the d series.

since you want the car to be a DD get a b18c1 IMO, those are nice engines

a boosted d series is better as far as price, potential power and replaceability. a big part of that is potential power the more you want the lower reliability gets.

but thats a great price for a mid miliage GSR, that'll last another 100k easy and be ten times more reliable and you wouldn't have to pay to tune you'll still put down 160 to the wheels, and you have a good d -series to do with what you want.

...a big part of that is potential power the more you want the lower reliability gets.
not true... a d series will be just as reliable if you don't throw a shat ton of boost at it... and if you build the bottom end right, you'll never have a problem with it. the weakest link in the d series drivetrain is the tranny, not the engine.

Well this sorta depends on the situation. I should hope to god you could get more torque out of a boosted d against B... but boosted B will spank boosted D in tq and hp
