ok so ive started going for this 3-d desktop thing with kubuntu and beryl. ill update this thread with my progress and ask for help when i run into trouble.

thanks to Dennis, i got the display problems figured out.

ive been following this tutorial for installing Beryl

http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/Install_Beryl_on_Ubuntu_Dapper_with_AIGLX

i followed the instructions, skipped the gdm modification (as per the specific instructions for Kubuntu (dapper) ) i get to the install beryl step and i run into some prolems.

i get this error, and i really dont know what it means

Code:
icrum@icrum-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install beryl emerald-themes
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
beryl: Depends: emerald but it is not going to be installed or
compiz-gtk but it is not installable
Depends: beryl-manager but it is not going to be installed
emerald-themes: Depends: emerald (>= 0.1) but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

not sure, what is GTK and how do i install it?

GTK... the Gimp ToolKit. It's needed for Gnome, so that makes me wonder of Kubuntu installed it.

Try apt-get'ting it. Never used Debian styles before, so I am not entirely sure.

a search for gtk+ tuned up like 100 different things.

4 of which are installed:

gtk2-engines-gtk-qt -theme engine using Qt for GTK+ 2.x
libgtk2.0-0 -The GTK+ graphical user interface library
libgtk2.0-bin -The programs for the GTK+ graphical user interface library
libgtk2.0-common Common files for the GTK+ graphical user interface library

what else do i need?

ok i got beryl downloaded and installed. so i logged out and logged back in (because i had a script set to auto run beryl on start up) and everything was messed up. all the windows would have the top part missing (the part with the close, minimize, and maximize buttons) and i couldnt do anything with the windows, i couldnt type anything, the mouse wass the only thing still working. i think something crashed but i dont know what. maybe Xorg. i temp fixed it by deleting that script. any ideas?

w00t, Beryl is working great now, 3D and all. its a little slow, but thats to be expected. my vid card has only 16MB of memory (and its borrowing another 32MB from ram)

these 2 tutorials helped a lot.

Install Beryl on Ubuntu Dapper with AIGLX - Beryl Wiki
HOWTO: 3D Acceleration in ATI Mobility Radeon M6 LY (and possibly others) - Ubuntu Forums

ill see about getting some screen shots :)

Welcome to the Linux world. If you had the know-how to resolve your initial problems by yourself (with howto's etc) and get it running... you're going to enjoy Linux.

Now snag some extra ram, a nice video card and see what it can do :)

its on a laptop, so i cant upgrade the vid card. i can upgrade the ram though. i only have 512MB now, and im using nearly all of it running beryl and all the other processes. anywhere between 400-500.

sucks that for a gig for my laptop is gonna be 150-200. it uses 144 pin SODIMM 133 MHz cards. so itll be a while before i can upgrade.

but im definitely liking it :)

hmm, is it normal to use this much resources?

ok. so i threw a 30 GB drive i had laying around into my desktop, and reformatted it and installed kubuntu. my desktop is quite a bit more powerful then the laptop so it should handle beryl quite nicely.

2.4 GHz P4
1 GB ram
nVidia Ti 4200 vid card, w/ 128 MB ram

now the problem im having is identical to the problems i initially faced with the laptop. beryl will not download and install. im getting the BREAK (install) error from the adept manager when i try to install it. some reseaching has turned up that its a dependency error and its conflicting with current installations, correct? well i dont know what its conflicting with.

the way i was able to get this installed on the laptop was i had my laptop at work and it just installed fine. i dont know how or why, it just did. im guessing the different network allowed it to install or something, i really have no clue. well i cant bring my desktop to work to try this, its too big, and i dont think my manager would like it, lol. i really dont know why i was able to DL from work, but not my own network. the only difference ismine is encrypted, but then again ive downloaded plenty pf other things just fione on my network.

ive also tried taking the packages from my laptop and installing them on the desktop via my jump drive. well doing this not only didnt work but i had a hell of a time getting them in the right folder with the permissions. these packages as i understand it are in the /var/cache/apt/archives folder. ive tried copying the contents of that folder from the laptop to the desktop via a jump drive but to no avail.

ive was kind of following this is it possible to download packages in other computer, copy and install in mine?-Ubuntu Help-Linux Forums but it dint work. he says once you get the files to just update in adept but the only update button is "Full Update" and that didnt do anything.

can anyone tell me what the issue is?

well i switched to fedora core 6 on my desktop. and ive been having a hell of a time getting beryl running. at first it didint seem to work on my original setup (nVIDIA Ti-4200 card 128M) so i bought a cheap upgrade.

Saphire Radeon 9600XT 256M

little did i know that ATI isnt well suppoted with linux. so i couldnt use AIGLX unless i wanted to use the slow driver. i downloaded the faster proprietary driver, and started to use Xgl instead. ive spent a solid 2 weeks trying to work out the bugs and get it setup and configured properly, but after lots of research i got it. beryl crashes when i run 'beryl-manager' though. it will only run if i choose 'beryl (without beryl-manager)' from the XGL Window Manager screen.

heres a screenshot.

What made you choose Kubuntu? I'm not sure to get that or ubuntu so i was wondering what you are mainly going to use this machine for and why you went with the programs you did
