Anywho, rap has sucked for about... ohhhhh the past 7 years or so. Rap died with Big, Pac, good Snoop, and NWA... all of whom went out (well snoop just sucked after Murder Was the Case) around the same time. Since then it has been a means for labels to exploit "artists" and turn them into one hit wonders, take all their money, and release them. That or offer them short term contracts or something with clauses that allows the label to release them at any time, but the one hit wonders just want that cash money yo. Like someone said above me, rap will never die.
Too bad rap still sucks and that there really arent that many good rappers left. Hip hop, which is different (it is, shame its usually included when people talk about rap), is booming. There are TONS of great artists comin out or comin out with awesome records. We're in the time of the independant/underground-ish artists. White and hispanic people are making some of the best hip hop right now...
the thing is, all rap is talking about these days are:
-ridin' on big rims
-having "bling bling"
-saying their name 50 million fuckin times in a song...ex: Mike Jones
-their "grilles"
-expensive clothing
-having millions of dollars and spending it like its nothing
i miss the good ol' days of rap when all the rap artists talked about dj'ing, having fun, partying...subjects that everyone could relate to. they are too materialistic these days. rap needs to go back the way it used to be like the days of Run-DMC, Grandmaster Flash, old school LL Cool J, Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock, Fat Boys, Digital Underground, hell even 2 Live Crew to name a few. they had fun making records for people to enjoy and relate too. and speaking of 2 Live Crew, their stuff is MILD compared to what is played now on the radio and MTV/BET/VH1. yeah i would have to say rap music has gone down the toilet over the past 10 years....

I think its the whole stigma of comercialized rap that is killing the entire industry. Almost all the artists seem to think that if they sing about the normal things;
1)Cocaine
2)Guns
3)Leerjets
4)Cars
5)Wheels
6)Hoes
7)Money
They can make money off an album. So they do. Producers also don't help the problem. They sign new artists, give them a signing bonus - and take almost all the profits from their first, and most likely - only hit, or hit record. This promotes one-hit wonders.
I really hate to say it, but some of the artists like...and this kills me to say this...Kanye West don't really fit into the stereotype, but the industry is just as bad.
We need a return to 90's rap, or at least rap thats about things other than bitchez and hoez.

i kinda miss will smith as an artist. he wasnt bad.
