well, i know we have a thread about rap dying, but listening to satellite radio this morning reminded me of it. Shade 45 is doing a tribute to Biggie today.

You might not agree that he is the best rapper ever, but he was revolutionary and changed the game of hip hop. He did to rap, what kurt cobain did for alternative.

Gotcha. Seattle alternative scenes were about having fun and rocking out. Curt made it all emo.

Hip Hop was about the same, but it became about egos, getting into trouble, and hating people. Not sure if BIG is to blame, and frankly don't care.

Will Smith is Rap's last bastion of hope.

no, not even close. he took what was underground and made music for a whole generation. every white guy over 25 knows Nirvana, the music and kurt cobain. he basically pushed out big hair and started a new wave of music. bands such as STP, Alice in chains, and even Pearl jam owe much of their success to cobain.

Biggie did the same. rap was what it was. kinda pop and on the tame side. ask any rapper who influenced them. they'll tell you Biggie is at the top of the list. he brought it to the public. started a revolution and paved the way for jay-z, eminem, nas, and all the greats.

AIC's facelift EP was out in 1989.... long before nirvana were even popular.

All of these guys predated Cobain. Cobain may have brought it into the eyes of more people than before, but I remember clearly the scene coming out (I was there, dammit). I saw TotD live in 91, they were doing just fine. Cobain brought the public eye to him because of his fucked up life. It's like saying "...what Mary-Kate Olsen did for dieting"

These are the greats ? No, these are the neo-rapper. The new generation. The greats were Humpty Hump, Run DMC, Public Enemy, Ton Loc, etc.

Biggie Smalls is part of that original crew, but what he did was ruin it. More Mainstream ? Yes. More Popular ? Again, yes. Better ? No way.

cobain created the popularity of alternative. without him, these bands wouldn't get 1/2 of the attention they did. they would still have made music, but very few would have heard it.

as for the rappers, i said Biggie was revolutionary. rap was underground until him. yeah, the other guys were around and a few people listened to it, but B.I.G. made it so every kid, black or white, listen to rap.

i give nirvana/cobain credit to smashing big hair band music forever. and i thank him for it. i hated that shit.
 
I think you're too young to remember Rap back then. But Rap was big way before the scene you're talking about. From beat boxing to break dancing, Rap has been #1 in popularity and airtime.

I remember these days clearly (I have a pair of break dancing goggles)

these are the true elements of hip hop. i'm talking about mainstream rap. i guess it's like the difference between grunge and alternative.

I agree with you nick and I also disagree. I agree that Biggie helped pave the way for the great lyricist we have today such as Jay-Z and NAS but I disagree with him paving the way for the new mainstream rap. He did help pave the way for the East Coast rap but the West Coast rap(gangsta rap, not hip hop) was already on and crackin' before and during Biggie's career.

as far as lyricist go, biggie is in my top 5. Jay-Z is a great lyrical MC but some of his beats he uses kills the entire song for me and no matter how great the song is lyricly, I can't get into it.

The top of my list is Canibus, Eminem, Biggie, NAS, Game, and Jay-Z. In no particular order. I honestly don't know what happened to Canibus though, IMO his lyrics were off the chart no matter how bad the beat from wyclef was lol but now it's like he fell off the face of this earth. OK, enough rambling, I gotta go do the brakes on my mazda.
 
the thing i liked about jay-z is his longevity. he keeps his game going with what is hot for music. he is the definition of pop. but i like him so i'm glad he has stuck around.

You keep saying the big paved the way for Nas / Gay-z , but the truth is Nas dropped Illmatic before big put out ready to die, and jay had all his tracks but didn't drop it until a year and a half later. I agree that big and more so all the drama that followed him brought hip hop into the main stream but i'll still never consiter him the best of all time. Personally all his songs were great, top notch even but it was still the say old bullshit topics, money, guns, bitch. Shit at least Nas and tupac are more diverse and talk about shit that matters, culture, politics, life, personal struggle. Agreed that all of them at one point in time have all pointed out the basics as stated above but to me it's the ones that can move out of that box that are on my top list. I mean stil tupac has been dead almost just as long and they are still putting out new tracks!!!

You give him credit for ending music about partying all night and starting music about everyone's problems? Don't get me wrong, I like Nirvana but 80s hair band music is some of my favorites.
