alright, ive got 2 choices and wanted to see if anyone knows the difference. ive got a 97 accord 4dr lx w/auto tranny. ever since i found out they made a accord type r, ive been dreaming of getting my hands on one (like everyone here who has an accord). ive been doing my homework, reading different swap guides, articles and posts and wanted to see if anyone thinks it'll be worth it to buy the jdm accord type r set up over the jdm lude setup. numbers wise, the atr setup makes 220 hp vs. the lude's 200. is it worth the extra 20 hp. or should grab the cheaper engine and spend the money on other mods like internals. my ultimate goal is to build a streetable, evo fighting accord. someone hit me over the head if this a pipe dream. anyways, just wanted to pick the brain of peeps whove been there/done that.

A Euro Type R or Accord Type R uses an H22A7 engine. I'm pretty sure it uses a PDE ECU (as I have one) but maybe they made a PCD as well for other reasons. You may want to confirm that the PCD ECU does NOT have an immobilizer and confirm 100% that all the OBD2b ECU wires match up. The PDE did not match up to my PAA (99 Accord OBD2b).

The older swap is pretty straight forward...

if you wan to do internals you better get mahle gold series pistons or sleeve that baby because forged pistons will not work in the stock frm h series sleeves.

get the newer h22 and then buy a chipped p28 or p72 and a obd1 jumper harness.

or you could just use the right prelude ecy for your chassis and wire it to the euro engine. they both have the crank angle sensor at the crank pully and you can pick up a adapter the allows you to use the stock 2 wire idle control valve

hahaha, evo fighting accord. thats a good one.

now that i got the laughing out of my system i'll answer your question.

the reason the accord R swap is more expensive is because it is newer and has generally less miles. It comes with LSD. and it has more power. it is also obd-2, which your motor is also. it would be the easier of the two swaps for you.

if you want to beat evo's, you will need to get one of the two, and do some sort of forced induction. your heavy ass car will need a lot more power than an NA motor will provide.

if you have the money, get the accord R. if not get the older one, obd conversion harness and turbo it. it's your call. just make sure you get the LSD also.

If you are getting the Type S or ATR engine (H22A7) use a proper ECU either the PCD or PDE as the H22A7 has more agressive cams and to obtain those gains use the proper ECU...

BTW, the PDE ECU is an "Accord" based ECU rather than a "Prelude" based ECU so the Immobilizers are different. The PDE does not require the Red key, etc. I have a PDE ECU and I've gotten around the immobilizer and can supply a working Key if you are going down that route...
