"Pivot" from Comcast and Sprint

Monday, March 26, 2007

This innovative wireless service puts the power of Comcast and Sprint in palm of your hand: "Pivot” delivers value, convenience and access to Comcast services to customers through their mobile phone.

Today, Comcast and Sprint, in our joint venture with other cable companies, launched the branding of "Pivot," the new product brand name for our integrated wireless service.
This service, which is currently launched in Boston and Portland, gives customers the ability to link their mobile phone service with their Comcast digital phone, and certain high-speed internet services and digital cable services.
Tom Nagel, SVP & GM Wireless Services
“We want to make networks and technology work to meet specific needs for our customers. Our unique partnership with Sprint allows us to do things that our competitors will find difficult to match," said Tom. “Pivot links your wireless phone with the comforts of home. Our common vision is to give customers anywhere easy access to the entertainment, communications and information services that are already important to them.”.”
Features
Pivot from Comcast and Sprint provides customers with the ability to:
  • Watch Mobile TV right on their wireless phone
  • Access home TV listings using a programming guide like the one they use at home.
  • Check their Comcast.net e-mail and access both home and wireless Voicemail on the go with one call.
  • Make calls between their Comcast Digital Voice home phone and their Sprint wireless phone, without using any minutes.
  • Have the convenience of one point of contact for service and billing.

Cool, I'm curious to see how this turns out. But do a lot of people use stuff like this? I don't know anyone that watches tv on there cellphone and I don't think I have ever seen anyone do it. Hell I know people with Blackberrys that use zero of the functions on it. I will be watching this closely though.

Well I like the availablity to use my comcast home phone service through my cell phone and saving my minutes :) Thats coming from internal website here at work.

I can see the advantage to that. I guess it would allow you to drop your plan almost to the baseline deal and you would still come out way on top. Unless sprint sets this up as its own independent plan.

It would be nice if all the telecom companies did this. I would love to streamline my bills and services. Having all my telecom needs met by one provider, i.e. cell, home, and dsl, would be great.

That is a really good point. Most of the big players already have the hardware there they just need others to play ball with. Comcast has the land lines down for both the net and VoIP and Sprint already has the towers. The rest is just minor details.

expect alot more from comcast in the next year. We have already began issueing boxes with credit card readers. To order food from your box, to paying your comcast bill. Starting up next year, our boxes will have your comcast.net email accounts able to be access from your digital box. So you can be watching football, get a notification of an email, and type a response and not leave your couch. Also we are looking into 30 mb internet with 5 mb upload. So the future is coming soon enough. This cell phone is our big project.

one thing we wont need in the near future is landlines. Everything will be wireless with WiMax...and I can't wait for that...

I still have concerns about WiMax though. Mostly about the security aspect of it. Plus how are we going to get bent over for this new "free" service.

i want FioS. too bad i can't get it here.

so, i'm waiting on comcast to do something on par with that.

Well, one of the reasons WiMax was created was because of the security risks with Wi-Fi, and the fact that it has a much larger connectivity distance. WiMax is in its early stages (Here in the U.S. at least), so I'm sure there will be more improvements, but it definitely has specific authentication standards and encryption standards that help keep data integrity and people from spoofing other users' services...

The service definitely won't be free. It will most likely be something that the local internet service providers get ahold of and throw out there for a rather expensive package. But, it depending on just how expensive it is, it could be worth it. Just think about the fact that you will have access to the internet ANYWHERE once it is implemented nationwide...i believe it could be very successful. It's already successful in Australia, India, Ghana, and other countries...I feel like the U.S. is behind in technology, because there are so many other countries who already have WiMax implemented

We have faster internet... lol In certain areas like in Jeffie's neighborhood, they are working on 30 down and 5 up... .for 52 bucks a month. Everywhere else has an available 16 down and 2 up.

i'm on 8 down, 768 up, and its 48 a month.

if they go to 30/5 for nearly the same price, ill be all over it. this upload shit is killing me.
