Ok Hopefully I am putting this in the correct forum, I am buying new cams for the Slo-Teg for just a mild increase in power I am not looking for big numbers or anything, just a little more power so i can do auto-x soon. So what should I get CTR cams or Skunk2 Pro series stage 1's???? Some people say go with the Skunk2's then I was talking to my tuner and he said he could get better numbers from CTR's.... Please help me with my decision, I already have Skunk2 dual valve springs and titanium retainers, oh and this is for a stock LS/VTEC (I,H,E) with GSR head if that matters.
Thanks in advance it's mucho appreciated. Oh and please don't say Toda's or something really expensive I would like to stay in the $500 range.

I'd go with the Skunk2's...

other than their suspension springs (which suck ass), I've had nothing but good experience with S2's products. I've used S2S2 cams in three of my motors, including the one that's currently in the rex.

Skunk2 FTMFW...you just have to make sure and get a good tune.

Sorry dude, didn't see this earlier. :)

What's your compression ratio at? If you're at or near stock you most likely would see a better over-all power curve with the CTR cams. You'll probably still get a little higher peak number with the S2 cams, but I like a nice curve over a peak number, myself.

Compression ratio is right near 10:1 its just a stock B18B1 with a GSR head. So which ones ya think?? Thanks guys I appreciate it. Everyone has been bragging about these Skunk2 Pro Series
Cams... We shall see what other people say and take it from there :)

Well I have done some research on some other sites since Blanco and Wil were the only ones to respond and I will be going with the CTR (intake cam) and an ITR (exhasut cam). Build thread to come soon with dyno numbers.

Can't wait to see the numbers.

Blanco I really don't understand why some people give you shit here I think you are really informative and know your shit and I thank you for your input.

Werd Clint I can't wait to get these it will happen within the next month :)

I see you already have your answer, so I'm only posting on here cause I'm doing some searching on cams and your thread came up, you wanted to stay in the $500 range but was looking at s2's pro 1's? ANyway's I guess I'll be starting my own thread now

Whats your setup looking like mang??? I fully agree with Blanco that with my compression ratio I will be over - cammed with those Skunk2 Pro Series Stage 1's, just make the right choice and you can get the CTR's and the Skunk2's for somewhere in the $500 range just depends on your hookups.

Don't wanna double post but my build is in my thread titled, Another cam thread, help.

Yep. I have a friends using both of these cams, the near stock compression/stage 1 combo made impressive peak numbers, but the CTR/ITR combo is much crisper and torquey.

I should add that the CTR/ITR guy had taken steps to increase his compression, i think it was milled for 10.8:1 and by "near stock" i mean he put in a thinner head gasket on a stock head.

matched>bigger anyday.

Ok guys and you too Blanco...LOL I have been reading alot of stuff saying to match valve springs and retainers with whatever cam you are going with well as you know I am going with the CTR/ITR setup and I have Skunk2 dual valve springs & titanium retainers, do you think this may be a problem at all????

You shouldn't have a problem...I don't think I've EVER run matched valvetrain/cams, and I've never had a problem. Currently I'm running a supertech valvetrain with Skunk2 Stage 2 cams, daily driven without a hitch for the last several months.

You shouldn't have a problem with the valvetrain and cams. I was running a crower stage 2 cam and skunk2 valve springs in my d16 for about a year until I spun a rod bearing. There was no excessive wear on the cam or anything. So you should be fine. Also I would go with the type r cams with the comp. you have. The skunks will over cam you.

well, i got a couple of things i have done. my old gsr stock block and stock head (but i did have a skunk 2 mainfold for the B16 like design) and 2001 type-r cams pulled out 170 no tuning and 175 after advancing the ignition to 21 degrees (yeah not really recommended unless you're on a dyno for a safe a/f ratio) later went on to some skunk2 stage 2 (not the pro-series) and w/cam gears went to 185 again w/the stock block and head but i did do some unknown used valve spring (aftermarket of course) and titanium retainers the only other thing worth noting is the type-r's love the b16 computer and you Need to have a chipped ecu for the skunk2 w/cam gears to get anything decent out of them, decide the overall plan. do you plan to build later on? or keep it stock? and oh the jdm 4-1 type-r header is the shizz. hope this helps... and lemme kno what you get out of them...

yea, that's rite on the IM just mainly pointing out that i am not using the 2stage gsr manifold. and the majority of the type-r i've seen on our dyno with the sae correction on with a stock ecu were doing 165- 170 on the jdm 11.0 compression not the gsr's 10.0, once using the stage 2 cams, the need for higher compression was really felt, but sold the motor anyway.
