Hi all,

I've got an '88 hatch with a D15B7 from a '93 civic mated to a cable operated 4-speed.
I'm taking a long road trip this summer and would like the additional highway fuel economy that a 5 speed would offer.

From reading the reference section, I see that an 88-89 HF transmission will give me the highest 5th gear ratio.

Is it fact that any D-series transmission is compatible with any other d-motor? I read somewhere that in 1988 only they used a different spline number shaft.

Do I need to be aware of any driveshaft length problems when mixing and matching these D-compatible transmissions in an EF chassis?

And on a side note; Anybody got a 88-91HF transmission for sale, or know the best place to get one? Junkyards in San Antonio get picked clean fast.

Thanks in advance,

Russell

yes, the HF tranny will work, and its gearing is hella long so it'll help with gas mileage also

What about those shaft splines? is there any difference from 88 to 89-91?

And what about those driveshaft lengths? Are they the same on the EF and the EG chassis?

Thanks for your help,
Russell

the 88 transmissions had a 21 spline input shaft (the part that goes into the clutch disc) - since your car is 88, if it still has the original transmission and you wanted to keep the clutch you have, you would need another 88 transmission - if you didn't mind putting a new clutch disc in it, then you could use any 89-91 transmission along with 89 clutch disc - if you wanted a larger clutch, you could use any 89-91 transmission along with any 90-00 flywheel and the 90-91 clutch disc and clutch pressure plate - the axles that are in your car right now will work with any 88-91 transmission (as long as it isn't a ZC transmission) - EF and EG axles are not the same - you cannot use any 92 & up transmission in your car as they use different mounts as well as using the hydraulic actuated clutch - the 5th gear set from the 92-95 Civic will work in the 88-91 transmissions - the ratio is close to the HF 5th - .702 vs .694
