Short story: 2nd gear is popping out and fifth wont hold well (doesnt pop, just kinda slides out over time until its not moving the car anymore)

Long story: I have had this awful gear noise coming from the tranny for the longest time whenever i let off the gas but stayed in gear. Then tonight at work i hear a popping/snap noise and POOF the grinding noise was gone, but then my second gear would not hold in, it kept popping itself out as soon as I would let off the gas. It will stay in as long as im on the gas. along with this, the tranny now makes a new 'sifting' noise at idle and sometimes on the road. I couldnt find an exact situation in the search. I wanted to see if my situation was any different from the others. due to that snapping noise o_O
 
syncros are shot. don't drive it if you don't have to. your tranny is about to die.
 
I was under the impression that the syncros were just what kept the gears from grinding. do they also hold the gear in place while driving? Right now i dont really have the option of abandoning this car. My second car has more problems than this and is waiting for the rex to stop breaking so i can get it worked on.
 
keep it out of second and fifth. it will last a little while, but you are going to get it fixed. make sure you have AAA or something to tow you when it breaks.
 
Yes, the synchros keep the gear engaged. Do as stated before and just skip 2nd and don't use 5th. Also, how are your torque mounts(transmission mounts)? If they're shot, that can cause missed gears and gears popping out too.
 
I had a blown front for a little while but replaced it with a solid insert. Ill check the mounts today for any other damage. I am assuming that it was inside the tranny considering the noise changes, but Ive learned never to assume the most expensive problem first. If this is the end of this tranny, this is the end of the road for the 210k HF motor. The car is committing suicide, I swear. I just solved another problem the day before this happened.

problems don't come alone. you get 4 or 5 things at a time. 210k is pretty damn good for that little car. trannys are cheap though. get a new clutch to.
 
Yeah but i look at 150 for tranny or 750 for ZC with tranny. hmmm. which way do i win the most :-D the ZC has been brewing for awhile, just havent had an opportunity to do it. This is just a step into forcing me to get it.
 
Look for a DOHC ZC transmission and buy an D16A6 engine and final drive :) Hell, a regular Si transmission is good enough too! I've seen people sell the A6 swap for like $200-$300 around here.
 
I like the idea, but i prefer the lower miles that i can grab from a ZC. Dunno, ill see whats available to me here and go from that.

That and ZC tranny has LSD!!!!
 
I guess I'm just a cheap guy. If you look around you can find some pretty awesome deals.

<- JDM D15B VTEC(~50k miles), P28 ECU and Z6 engine harness, new O2 sensor, ebay 4-2-1 header, intake.....all for $200; guy decided to go LS instead.

Later on I picked up a DOHC ZC transmission for $70, Si countershaft for $15 and 92-95 EX differential for $15 also. :)
 
When you say the transmission is about to break, Do you mean that it will be completely unusable or just very difficult to drive? The car is my livelihood (delivery driver) and using the honda (even broken) is bearable when my other option is a 15MPG camaro.


after rebuilding my HF, ive become an all-at-once kinda guy. I hate fishing up several different parts and waiting on the right ones to come in in order to do a certain job. I like the idea of paying 750$ and getting everything i need, maybe having to pick up a few things at autozone before i start.

it will become completely unusable. your synros and gears will break. all of the pieces and particles will grind up with your other gears and completely seize the tranny.

skip 2nd and 5th until you find a new tranny. but in the end you will need a new tranny.
