My rear brakes decided to start doing what they were doing two years ago. (remember that?)

They aren't that bad, but they're getting to the point of no return.


So I said fuck it and got some hawk HPS pads and brembo blanks.

I may have to do the calipers as well. I'll get to learn how to bleed brakes.
 
Bleeding brakes is SO easy.

When you "bleed" a system, you're removing air bubbles. When the pedal goes down, fluid comes out. When the pedal goes up the piston goes the other way and sucks air in.

Push the pedal down, allowing fluid to come out. Then seal it off, and bring the pedal up to fill the cylinder with new fluid instead of back-air. Repeat.

Do this until the lines stops pushing out air bubbles (Little farts) and it's a continuous stream of brake fluid.

That's the simple description. You'll want to use other methods (I use an air hose from the fishtank to examine the fluid for air)

that works well too
run the line into a small container with brake fluid so it sucks fluid instead of air
the one person bleeders work well too
 
we think one of the pistons in the caliber is stuck. its causing the brakes on the rear to squeel some kinda awful. not the squeel of brakes going bad but a squeel i have never heard of.
 
Also, now that I look at the picture, is that being balanced on your foot ?

oh, i thought that was a before and after shot... not at the same time.

so yeah, if one pad is getting killed, yeah, caliper is toast
 
squeelling is cause by the high vibrations of the pad riding on the caliper, thats why the grease is used as a lubricant to between the caliper and the pad.
 
No, Steve, that was my old pad and the new pad which was replacing it before we put the new pad on in August 2005.

The passenger rear pad wasn't down that far, that's the driver rear pad. It's the one squealing right now.

Edit: I'm holding the pads on the top of my right hand, my thumb is tucked under my palm.
 
Autozone wants 57 plus a 44 dollar core charge for each front caliper, and 67 plus a 44 dollar core charge for the rear caliper.

114+88= 202 and 134+88 = 226 = 424 bucks for calipers... of which I would get 176 back...

Anyone know where I can buy rebuilt ones without a goddamn core charge? I don't feel like jacking up my credit cards anymore than they already are.
 
take caliper off, use an air nozzal to pop the piston out, rip off all seals, dip into parts washer, dip into avgas, sandblast caliper, dip in avgas again, hone the cylinder, dip in avgas again, spraypaint, and then move to the piston. Wire brush it, parts washer, scotchbright pad it, dip in avgas, then open rebuild kit. dip seals in brakefluid, put seal on piston, put piston back in caliper, install piston dustseal, cavitate piston, and install on car.

done.
