I've never worked on cars before, but I just picked up a 1993 Integra GS from my sister for $500. The car runs good, but since it was cheap my wife believes anything I do to it has to be an improvement, so she has given me free reign to do whatever I want to it. I have great ideas for the cosmetic stuff, but I don't know what to do under the hood. I think I might want to swap out the Automatic for a Manual transmission, and I was thinking about an engine swap. Any advice on what to do and how to do it would be greatly appreciated.

ok dude if your going to do a manual swap u might as well do a motor swap like either putting a 93 gsr (b17) in it those motors are rare and bad ass or you could do a ls-vtec conversion don't know if your going for speed or looks though but thats what i would do

1. take out power steering pump, cylinder, & all hoses-i was not a fan of this, untill i saw how much cleaner/clearer the engine bay is

2. if you live in a northern state take out AC...you don't need it for crying out loud. + more HP.

3. i got a `90 GS & ABS is a bitch w/ space...consider taking that out

4. take off the heat shield, it looks better w/o it

5. get a nice set of ceramic headers, since they won't change colors and look all fojax after a week of use

6. consider buying a sander/spray gun and sand your car down. bondo small gaps w/ fiber mesh, or weld metal on in big gaps. sand. primer. paint. clearcoat.

7. you are WAY too early into an integra to do an engine swap...fix the basics before anything else

basically if these basic things are done your car will look tons better...ooh yeah, think about getting your engine bay detailed (i work at a car wash/detail center) it makes a big difference. acids are sprayed on and they take off a lot of gunk & oil near the head gasket and anything else...anymore suggestions or want to more teg info, hit me up at nate.slack@gmail.com

first thing to do is get a chilton manuel for the car, unless you know exactly what you're working on like the back of your hand.

Ok, I already had the Chilton's because I've had a '91 Legend for years and recently had to get rid of it. It just so happens that it was the same manual. I'm gonna have to take this Integra slowly since I'm just learning. I think I'm going to start with the exhaust because I need to replace it anyway to pass California smog emissions. Should I just replace the muffler with something standard off the shelf, or should I go all out with the exhaust while I'm in there? If I should go all out, what should I do?
