Do work
First off, I'm new to the swap world. I have the chance to get a y8 head for my 1.6 crx, and I'm goin for it. My main question about it though, is untill I get either a new ecu with vtec or a vtec controller, will a toggle switch work, as long as I make sure to shut it off when I'm not gunnin it? I have one of the toggle switches that have the protective cover, and it automatically shuts the switch to the off position when the cover is closed. Would this work as a temporary fix untill I get the ecu or controller?

Remember, I'm new to the swap world.

compression?

The only question that nobody has yet answered for me, is about compression. I don't really understand compression, and what's dangerous and whats not. I understand why it is dangerous, but I don't understand the dangerous area's of the numbers. The d16a6 has a cr of 9.1:1 and the d16y8 has a cr of 9.6:1. Is this dangerous enough that i'm going to have to change a lot of stuff, or use the super unleaded or what? I understand i'll probably have to change something but I figure I would like to know exactly what and how dangerous.

***I used the compression calculator (Compression Calculator) but didn't know which piston i would be using because i'm not 100% keen on the internals of an engine. with the d16a6 pistons the cr is 10.07:1, and with the d16y8 pistons it is 9.52. Again, I need the whole dangerous levels help.***

compresion

You'll be ok with the y8 motor you can run 93 octane if ud like, but you dont start getting dangerous until u go over 12.5.1 so you'll be ok. As for vtec get either a vtec controller msd one or sumthing or get a pr3 B16 ecu but i would still run the vtec controller cause vtec from 5800 to 7500 sucks u drop out all the time, in my Y8 motor I run it from 4400 to 7500 in a B16 ecu(PR3) runs great.

i say buy the parts if u have the money, but dont install it till u have all the parts....

here is my set-up

98 full y8 motor not a mini-me (no vtec hooked up till i get the jumper harness)
88 zc internals pushing 12:1 compression
8lb flywheel and stage 2 proclutch and pressure plate.

spend the extra money and get the zc internals i.e. pistons, rods, crank and crank pulley. just my 2 cents

Thanks for your input, but did you notice that this was last active in May? It's November, and I have a setup, but thank you very much.

Haha, it's cool. It's turned into a winter project.
Plans are:
P29 pistons .020"/.5mm over
Crower Stage 3 cam with matching springs and retainers
A good quality header, unsure about what.
A quality port and polish
ARP head studs
ARP rod bolts

check out the build thread in my sig

I dunno if you have read my thread already, but here's my setup. Check my siggy for the write-up

1992 Civic CX D15B8 Block
1997 D16Y8 Head *Milled, Mild P+P*
1997 D16Y8 Intake Manifold, Fuel rail, and FPR
Origional Injectors
Origional D15B8 Dizzy
D16Z6 Spark Plugs and Wires *Need to change those, but they work fine*
Megan Racing UDP
Z6 Timing Belt
P05 ECU Chipped by Pherable for Vtec and my setup.

Despite all the big debating, I wouldn't go all-in a SOHC, and especially not in a MiniMe,
Reasons being:
high CR so I can't boost safely
Weak Rods *Yours are better than mine, but regardless
Parts get expensive.

I highly recommend changing your bottom end (Or just your pistons AND rods such as Vitara Pistons and LS rods) and boosting, or swapping to something with more potential as you are just splitting hairs to get maybe 150 NA HP out of a SOHC

honestly, I'm not trying to go all-out crazy with this. My brother has a $15k ls/vtec that the guy before him had built and installed in the car, and he's only makin around 195 whp. I'm more or less doing this as a small project to get me comfortable deep in disassembling engines and swappin shit out. Once I do this, and get this running good, I'd like to pick up like a 90 lx and go boosted, not sure about d or b series though. Or maybe I'll throw this motor in there, and go boosted in the crx, I'm not sure yet. This is mostly just to get me comfortable.
