Over the recent weeks I have been giving some considerable thought to buying a pool cue. I enjoy playing at my local watering hole and have gotten fairly decent at shooting straight pool with my buddies and the regular at the bar. I used to work there and it is fun to go back and shoot the shit with everyone over a friendly game of pool. I have been using a couple of my buddies cues and like the way the feel. I have absolutely no clue what to look for when it come to a decent stick and would like a few pointers. I know a few of you shoot on occasion ( B a some others) so I know that I can count on some decent advice.

here are the perticulars:

I have the viking headquarters located here in town.

I have a bachelor's party coming up so it may be a gift.

I would like to keep it close to 250.00 or less for a decent beginner cue

A buddy of mine works for Pool Cues, Pool Cue Cases, Billiards and Gameroom Accessories at PoolDawg so he can get me a good deal on a cue they carry.

What do I look for or even want in terms of features for a 19 - 21 oz cue?

Is a cue one of those things that I have to actually go and shoot with in order to tell which one works for me?

What are the best brands besides Viking to go with?

Thanks in advance for any input.

i found a couple links that might help. my biggest thing i look for is a good tip. i want a solid tip i can shape and use to grip the cue really well. i focus a lot on ball control and spin. i don't see the need in spending more than $200 on a cue because i consider myself a pretty damn pool player and can beat 9/10 people with just a house cue.

Make sure you are going to play a lot before you make a big investment. if it is going to be casual playing, don't buy something you don't want to lose or have broken. also, if you are getting married, believe it or not, your pool playing time WILL get cut down.

I picked up a slightly used viking in my local pool hall for $80. The guy ordered it for $240 which was the pool hall's cost. Ran into financial trouble 2 weeks later, and I was there with cash in hand. Was a great cue until one of my ex's stole it. It was a messy break up, and the cue wasn't worth going after.

Great Cues!

^^No, that wasnt the one I had.. Just drooling on it :D

I wish the Viking factory here in Madison actually sold cues. It would be awesome if they had a scratch and dent sale or something along those lines. As for my pool playing time decreasing I don't see that happening. The soon to be wifey doesn't care if I go out one or two nights a week and when we buy a house we have already agreed that a pool table/pong table will both be in the basement somewhere.

alright here is the thing. first of all ask yourself how often you are going to play and how serious you are going to be. if you are going to just be going down to your local bar and you are not going to be playing in leagues and tournaments then a viking , players, mcdermott, or scorpion cue is right for you. i would stay around the 100 no more than 150 range. if you are going to become a serious player and you are thinking about tournaments in the near future than a custom cue is the way to go. and the misconseption with alot of people is that they think they are going to spend 3k on a custom....... but you can get yourself a 3 to 4 hundred dollar custom that you can upgrade along the way. what i mean is changing the components of the cue. tip, shaft, joint, weights, pins.... Thanks for the insight, like I said I am just entertaining the idea of getting a cue. I definately do not need a 3000.00 dollar cue. I do play pretty regularly with buddies at my local water hole and the house cues there suck ass from idiots who bang them around all the time. I have been using my buddies "sneaky pete" and I just like the way a decent cue feel. Not to mention the fact that I would feel bad if I broke his tip or something. I just threw out the 250.00 mark because that is roughly what I could spend. I have been looking on Craigslist and every now and then I see one but I am leary on whether or not it is actually in good condition or if it is stolen. Thanks to all that responded and I will let you know if I get something.
