Hey Guys-

This would be my first post here, as this is the first time I've even been close to owning a Honda. Hopefully I'll be sticking around for quite a while after this. :)

I've been looking for a new car lately, as I had to get rid of my 05 Mustang. My budget for a car is about $4500 or less, as I'd like to have money left for insurance (I'm a 19 year-old boy, insurance is insane), gas, repairs, etc.

I've been talking to this guy who's selling his 95 Del Sol. It's got the VTEC engine, a custom baby blue paint job (which needs some waxing badly), custom exhaust, front and rear torsion bars, cold air intake, underglow, aftermarket sound, rims, grille, etc. I know aftermarket stuff doesn't really affect resale value, but I wanted to mention the amount of work this guy's put into his car.

He took me for a spin in it for about 10 minutes to show me how it rode. Shocks and suspension seemed good... it rides real low but it was smooth and I only heard it scrape a TINY bit when he had to cross some railroad tracks going uphill. When the engine was idling, it wasn't rough or skipping at all, and while we were driving I never heard anything out of the ordinary (the engine has 160,000 miles on it but still sounds new). As far as the transmission goes, it shifts smoothly, and I didn't hear any RPM spikes or anything like that while we were driving. I will say, though, that he was driving like a maniac. I hope he was just trying to show off what the car could do, and that he doesn't drive like that everyday. If he does, there's a good chance that there's not much time left before that transmission needs to be replaced.

He originally was asking $4000 for the car. After he listed it, the car got nailed by a hit-and-run that did some damage to the rear driver's side tail light, fender, and bumper. There's also a small dent in the center of the trunk, on the edge right above the Honda H-symbol. He's already had the damage looked at and has the paperwork showing how much it'll cost to repair - he says he has some hookups for the paint and whatever else.

So I guess I have a few questions, and this seemed like a really good place to ask.
1. Without the damage, would the car have been worth $4k?
2. Should I have the guy get the repairs before I purchase it?
3. If the transmission does need replacing soon, where would be a good place to find a decent replacement?
4. How much $$$ should I offer this guy for the car?

For those of you that actually read all that crap, thank you... I know a lot of people don't like reading posts that are more than a paragraph long. Hopefully a few of you will be able to give some input that'll really help me. Thank you.

When you say "it's got the VTEC engine," do you mean the single cam or the dual cam? If it's the single cam those are pretty common. If it's got the dual cam B16, that would definitely be worth a bit more.

Also, the story about the hit and run seems a bit sketchy to me. Is the car insured properly? If he has insurance on it then he should have filed a police report, and then taken the report to his insurance agency, who should have paid for the car to be fixed (possibly minus any deductibles he might have). Did he already get the money for it and he's trying to sell the car as is?

I would confirm the repair estimate and make sure exactly how much you would have to pay to get it repaired, and then ask him how much he wants for it as is. If he's getting insurance money for the car that's essentially free money in his pocket, so I'd look to either have him get the repairs done for you or for him to offer you a pretty significant discount on the car.

Thanks for the help so far, guys. I was definitely leaning towards having him repair the damage before I bought it. I would've run the KBB on it already and gone by that, but because I was unsure of which trim package it was I figured it'd be smarter to ask some enthusiasts for their take on it.

As I said in the original post, I don't have any real experience with Hondas. All I can tell you about the engine itself is that it had the VTEC logo stamped directly in the metal and it didn't have the black or red cover that I often see in pictures online. I just googled pictures of the D16z6 and the B16a3... looks like the D16 in these pictures:

And I'm sure you guys can tell just from these two posts that I'm not a gearhead. Please don't eat me. :D I'd really like to get to know my cars on a much more intimate level, but I just don't know where to start.

Yeah, if that's what the motor looks like than the car is an Si model with the single cam motor. Not a bad motor by any means, but definitely a lot more common than the B16-equipped version.

As far as the price goes, I would look it up in KBB and stick pretty close to that. It's ok to offer a little bit more since the car is modified, but anybody who's spent some years tricking out their cars will tell you that you shouldn't even expect to get half of what you paid for any aftermarket performance parts back when you sell the car. This is even true for cars that are highly modified. You could pay $5,000 for a car and then spend $20,000 on a motor swap, paint job, turbo setup, built motor, etc., but when it comes time to sell the car, it will go for around $10,000 to $15,000.

I guess what I'm saying is if he wants to jack the price way up over blue book because of the mods I would probably pass on it.

If the guy tried doing that I wouldn't even consider it. Luckily, the guy knows that mods don't mean squat when you're selling a car.

Odd that he didnt let you drive.

Take it to get an estimate at a body shop (99% of em will give you a free estimate) The KBB private party sale "excellent" value of the car is $3335.00. Subtract the estimate from the value. If you feel the aftermarket parts are worth it, adjust it a few hundred, but don't go crazy.

Say there is $800 in damage. $3335.00 - $800 (what it would take to get the car to "excellent" shape) +$400 for rims/tires/parts/whatever would leave you around $2900. Wave that cash in front of his face, and I'd bet he'd snatch it up.

P.S. Rear quarter panel damage is usually stupid expensive to fix. Get a couple of different shops to give estimates. With the damage you described (and without looking at the car) I'd be willing to bet you are around $1200.

definatly not worth it IMO, Pickup a EF or EG hatch for 1-2K and have some fun with it. Spend the 2K diffrence in a swap, or to your own taste.

Unfortunately the Del Sol and the S2000 are the only two cars made by Honda that I like, and of those two, the Sol is the only one in my price range.

Luckily, I've found a few more Del Sols for sale in the area. I'm about to call this guy and arrange a meet so I can check out his stock 95 Del Sol. It's most likely an Si, and it's been garage kept for most of it's life. He's asking $4900 but I'll definitely want to negotiate for a lower price. If you guys want I'll keep you updated with every one that I look at. :)

If you have a decent job and $4500 laying around, pickup a used S2000 with a parents co-sig, and plop down the 4500 as a downpayment. help keep your payments low, build your credit, and you will have a much nicer/faster car to start with.

I thought about doing something like that, Dasfinc. The problem is, I live with my dad and my stepmother right now, and even if they were doing okay financially (which they aren't), my stepmom would make doing something like that quite difficult.

Heck, she gets pissed every time I mention wanting a 2-seater... she wants me to bus her 3 other kids around whenever she asks.

Though of an Integra?

i'd stay away from that.. sounds like he is a ricer and probably ran the shit outta that motor.. try and find something completely stock because chances are its never been raced

My mother was the exact same way, I picked up a 93 taurus SHO because of that reason, Fast as hell stock 4-door handled great as well, and filled it with people/shit. I later picked up a 2007 ford Focus as my daily driver, and inherited a honda, and dropped the SHO later. I'd recommend a SHO taurus if thats what you are going to be fighting against. Cheap to pick up one used, good sized aftermarket, and your mom will think its just a 'responsible family car' and boy will she be wrong when you lay rubber down your block ;)

pass on this bud, just be patient i know its hard but wait for the right one.

Just a little update for ya guys...

I found another Sol listed locally, but someone else scooped it up before I could even contact the seller. It looks like the closest one right now is 3-4 hours from here (I'm in Savannah, GA). I don't mind traveling that distance to purchase a car, but to just check it out, forget it. Luckily I found one in Atlanta that has a lot of info with some pics included:

1994 Honda Civic Del Sol VTEC

It is missing a few parts like the OEM side skirts and fog lights.
Engine is one of Honda's greatest, the B16A3 DOHC 1.6L VTEC and it runs like brand new!

Guy had some pictures of the car before and after the new paint... looks like some body work was done. I'll certainly be asking for the VIN to see if any accidents were reported.

Certainly not worried about the fog lamps or the skirts, as they won't be too much of a hassle when I decide to fix them. Other than that, the exterior looks great. Interior is good minus a little tear in the driver's seat cushion. Guy's now asking $4000 OBO. Questions/comments?
