Anybody here ever see these two swaps go head to head? I'm refering to the GSR B18C NOT the Type R.

I havn't seen both together in person, but if it matters at all though i really havn't been too impressed with the b20 swaps i've seen/experienced in person if your looking for power....don't wanna start an arguement about b20's just saying my personal experiences with them hasn't shown me much. I feel like a gsr enigne is much more reliable and versatile.

my two cents

b20 hatch here runs a 13.4
cams and gutted interior
94 i believe
pretty quick
b18c better out of the box, but b20 is cheaper

LOL comparing a b20 and a b18c is like comparing a track start to a 8th gradeer running track, the b20 is good, yes potential yes, b18c has WAY more potential then the b20 would, as for price the b18c will be more expensive, and the b20 would be way cheaper(good for low budgeters) but theres not really a comparison, you should compare the b18c to say a b16, or the older gsr engine(b17) and compare the b18(lsmotor) to the B20(crv) motors would be more fair

If you are talking b20/vtec vs a b18c, then it is a different story. I have a jdm gsr hatch with bolt ons, and a guy down my street has the same car as me but with a b20/vtec with bolt ons. We havn't raced, however, his car feels much better down low and in the midrange, and has better power up top as well. It is definately faster.

I was curious about comparing them since they both seem to make similar torque numbers, just the b20 makes it peak torque much quicker , also I was reading the old article on honda hybrid: HYBRID: B20 Driving Impressions

Abviously the b18c would win in the long run in an all out drag race, but i'm much more curious about street/freeway driving impressions. no I was not refering to the b20/vtec, just a jdm b20, bolt ons etc.

My first post is a little inaccurate when I said to head I was thinking more of a comparison in driving then an actual race.

The b20 will have more low end grunt. It was designed for a heavy ass CRV... I can tell you that with the gsr in my hatch, low end power is not an issue whatsoever. Yeah, all the power is up top, but my hatch is light as hell, so it feels like I have decent low/midrange. For instance, if I am in 3rd gear going 25 mph and I need to accelerate, there is no bogging. I used to own a 99 civic si, and the low end acceleration is 100x better IMO. On the highway in 5th, acceration sucks at 50 mpg, gets better at 60, and pulls harder and harder the faster I go.

Transmission is a huge issue here too. A B20 paired with a short-geared tranny (B16, GSR, Type R, etc.) is obviously going to move better than a B20 with stock transmission.

I like the mention of b16a2 compared to the b18c above....good point, throwing a turbo on a b16 isn't a bad way to go, great engines.

As to the tranny on a b20, also very good point. A b20 with vtec, and the LSD and close gears of a type r tranny would be a force to be reconned with, but i guess at that point why not just get the typeR engine and get it over with.

I still think the b20 has nothing on a GSR, each having stock trim.

as far as the b16a goes though I would think the b20 would kill it off the line, maybe even keep up with the b18c for 1st and 2nd gears?

I have seen it 1st hand.. lol.. i have a 93 honda civic cx with a b18c1 gsr swap. my friend has a 96 honda civic coupe with a b20 swap.. keep in mind that both of these cars are bone stock except for exhaust and intakes. We were both at a light. He had the jump on me, so he took off 1st and at the end of 1st gear, i was slowly inching up on him. 2nd gear i was slow pulling away from him. and 3rd gear.. well lets just say... "someone got spanked!!!!" lol.. and it wasnt me!
RECAP!!
B18C1(STOCK) > B20(STOCK)

B18C1 WILL OWN THE B20 2ND GEAR AND ON!!

you're right, the b20 has no stock tranny since the CRV is AWD, so its either GSR, SIR or Type R.

not every crv is AWD, actually it's almost a 50/50 split between fwd and awd as far as productioon goes.
