I wonder what the weight difference is, and if it was converted to straight RWD.

It probably doesn't weigh any more than before... the LS1 is fairly light, and all the turbo stuff on top of the 4G blocks is pretty heavy.

LS1 = all aluminum, very lightweight.

497lbs manual, 458lbs auto.

LT1 = iron. Ls1 = cast aluminum. 350hp/350tq.

The 4G63 is an iron block with cast heads. The weight shouldn't be that different. I couldn't find a number but maybe Chris will know the weight of the 4g63.

Another thing to factor in is the actual weight distribution and balance of the car initially, a heavier engine up front might distribute the weight better and make the car handle better or conversely it might negatively effect handling. Its difficult to know without all the facts of weight distribution and engine/trans weights.

:werd: I know the LS1 into a newer body RX7 only adds 60 pounds to the overall weight, but the handling of AWD > RWD with a massively torquey V8.

RWD > AWD, except in inclement weather, when all other conditions are equal.

AWD understeers and plows through turns much like FWD.

I realize that. The car was built as an AWD platform. Now it's a RWD platform with torque coming out of every crevice, I doubt he'll use it to autocross anyway.

Tub it and put some giant slicks back there ftw!

This may mean he would break axles or a stock transmission, but how does this effect the handling negatively?

Take a second and see where I'm heading with this; I'm not quite sure what the weight distribution of an Evo is but hypothetically if an Evo was 45/55 weight distribution. If the LS1 weighed more, then hypothetically the guy may have achieved a perfect 50/50 weight distribution and hence better handling.

It would be impossible to say without knowing the weight of all the components (replacement parts such as axles and the engine and tranny) and the weight distribution of the car.

It may or may not handle as well, but gut instinct says that it handles very similarly to stock because there can't be that much of a weight difference.

With that said, if I just paid $30k for a car, I probably wouldn't be ripping the engine out to throw a LS1 - I would've just bought the used C4 or C5.

It can't. He's talking about the 4g63 block and those numbers won't include the extra weight for the AWD system, intercooler, turbo, piping, etc.

We really have no way to verify if thats the actual weight either, since we're trying to ballpark numbers off the top of our heads.

I would think the 4g63 would weigh more than that because of the iron block, but then again thats why the block can make so much power with such small displacement.

My original theory hinged on the fact that 2000 seemed to think that the LS1 was some huge, heavy engine when in fact the displacement is large (or was large, given the standards of the time) but the engine has always been revered for being so powerful and lightweight.

I never said the LS1 is huge and heavy. Well it's huge, but it's not heavy. Full aluminum block and I believe aluminum heads? (can't remember that part). Like I said, the newer RX7 with a built LS1 only added 60 lbs to the overall weight of the car.

My point is is even though it's a RWD car now, a supercharged LS1 will put down 500+ ft lbs of torque and with it being that lightweight with (what look like) stock EVO9 rim/tire combo, it doesn't look like its going to handle like the EVO9 as a full AWD platform would.

It's just a simple observation, I have no way of knowing if it's handling was improved or would be worse with the LS1-RWD layout vs the 4g63-AWD layout. :dunno:

Ok, I didn't think so. The turbo hardware is all pretty heavy....
