!i!i!i!i!i!i!i!i!i!i!i!
So as most of you know, im selling my car.

I have been getting emails and such from people who want to come buy and test drive it. Granted they sound interested in buying the car, but they could just be looking for a chance to drive my "mad tight JDM dorifto whip".

What steps can i take to help ensure that serious people drive the car, and that broke ass morons dont?

I was thinking of charging $50 for each test drive or something . . .

make them bring cash if they want to drive it. that way if the ass end slips out and wreck, they get to buy it.

So i should tell them that they need to be prepared to buy the car on the spot with either cash or a money order? Thats not a bad idea. . . it will keep morons away from the car.

Here is what I do:

They can show up and look over the car all they want. They can drive if I go with them. This drive will be at speed limits, with reasonable driving limitations for safety (Safe and prudent)

If they want to see what the "can do", I will be behind the wheel. If they want to see what it can do with THEM behind the wheel I require full money down for 60 days. I have a contract typed up that I will hold their money for 60 days and pending no issues with clutch, brakes, etc they will get their full money back.

Try convincing people to test ride a bike. Whoa.

you drive them. show them the car, etc etc.

if they want to drive it, tell them they can when a serious offer has been worked out and paperwork/money xfer is ready to go.

Go with them on test drives.

And take that trunk carpet to a high pressure car wash and spray it off, then let it dry in the sun on a flat surface. It'll look brand spanking new after a good spray down. Trust me on this.. Then when they open the trunk, they'll see that it looks brand new inside instead of all rusty/stained up.. It'll help sell the car, and it only costs a buck or two.

That deposit idea is good. That way, they had basically had better be buying the car.

I will definately make sure they have cash/MO ready to go when they show up. No money = no test drive.

show up at a bike dealership in MA with a class M and a full-face helmet and you can test drive any bike you want, Steve :)

I agree with the others--no money no drive, thats how it is with all the cars I looked at and I didn't expect anything else. Charging 50 dollars for a joy ride = invitation to beat on the car IMO.

True that. Ill tell them to bring full pmt with them.

i know a buy thats a small-ish bike dealer
he requires cash, and puts it in a microwave in the shop
you wreck the bike, he takes the cash, you bring it back and don't want it, you take the cash

I guess he was too small-ish to afford a safe. :p

Yes, that's a dealership. In CT it's the same, but if they don't "like you" then they can easily turn you down. They did that with sue "You both have permits, but he pulled up on a bike, so I would let him drive, and let you drive with a full downpayment"
