Variable boost

Does such an item exist which allows you to change your boost level/fuel mappings on the fly? For example, a motor which has multiple boost settings; maybe a minimum of 0-1 psi, and a max of 12, (or whatever).

Feel free to burn me out for asking stupid questions.

ive never heard of such a thing being available on the retail market, but im sure its coming.

you can setup an electronic boost controller and have maps ready on your laptop for whatever you wanna run, but i think thats the closest thing thats available for retail.

So what are some of the better boost controllers you're referring to? And roughly how long would it take to change your settings....like 10- 15 seconds?
Will a turbocharged engine with the boost down to 0 psi behave roughly the same as a NA engine? I'm basically looking for an engine that can run with little to no boost and be easy on gas, and have the option to jack up the boost when you want all your power. Suggestions? Looking for 275-300 Hp out of a B16B.

a boost controller can only go up, not down.
your minimum is set by your wastegate spring.
your maximum is about double that in psi with a boost controller.

If you want to get good gas mileage, get a larger turbo that doesn't spool up so quick, so normal crusiing under 3500 rpms you aren't in boost.

you can have a 500hp car and still get 25mpg. its all about how much of your right foot you use.

:werd:

rewriting an ostrich rom emulator is about a 2 or 3 minute ordeal. If you wanna switch between 7 and 15lbs of boost, factor in a 3 minute time frame for the switch.

well...i'm looking for around 300+hp out of a B16B, and the goal is to get 30+ mpg (light footing of course). So now, would this thing be gutless at 3500 with a large turbo?

Any more suggestions perhaps?
:)

unless youve already bought the b16b, buy a b18b and boost that...300 is asking a lot from a b16b with that CR.

I havent bought anything yet...however I kind of want to turbo the higher CR engine, so that it's more fuel efficient when running with little boost. Also the same reason why I wanted to go with the 1.6, plus the 9000 RPM rev limiter is appealing.
What exactly makes it difficult to get that power out of the high CR engine? Just the required fuel/engine management system?
And would it be reccomended or required to change the connecting rods and pistons?

im going to stop here and tell you to search.

high CR + boost = bang.

The higher the CR the lower threshold for error you have in tuning a FI car.

Fair enough...what's a good safe CR to work with?
Any suggestions on what I should run for a setup?

i wouldnt go any higher than 10:1 (personally)...thats why i suggested you get a b18b rather than a b16b

Ok, so say I go with the B18C1 --> CR of 10.0:1 ; If I go with this engine boosted, Is it reasonable to expect 250,000+ Km's out of the motor, and/or is it advisable to upgrade the bottom end and valvetrain. Keeping in mind that this will be a DD car, that will be lit up regularily (maybe few times a week, and never for long periods of time).

its possible, but i wouldnt gaurentee it. A lot of the life of a FI engine is dictated by the way its driven and the tune of the engine.

10-15 second..thats "fast and the furious" shit...just wait till next summer and you are gonna be able to see it in the next movie..:D get a electronic boost controller!!!!!!;)

I think you're expecting the world from something unreasonable. If you want something that gets 30 mpg and >300 whp, buy a vette and put a bottle on it if you want more power.

Wanting 300 whp out of a 1.6 liter engine, 30 mpg, multiple tunes, and have it not be gutless throughout most of the powerband is just asking for trouble. Pick and choose what you want.

Well for one, expecting 300hp and 30 mpg from a 1.6 is absolutely NOT unreasonable. However I do realize it would have to be gutless down low. It sounds to me you just want to put your 2 cents in and cause an arguement. I'm here asking questions and looking for advice, so give me a break and shut up when you have nothing useful to say.

If you get your panties in a fucking bunch then get off of a forum. You asked a question and I gave you my opinion. If you've ever modded a car beyond I/H/E or basic crap then you should know you don't get everything and that's exactly what I said.

christ...hes right...ive never heard of a b16turbo that gets 30+ MPG
