Town ordinances.

My friends were cited $50each and had mandatory court appearances for parking on my lawn, last year, when I turned 21. The ticket may seem petty to you, but it was the fact that the two guys went to schools a few hours a way and had to arrange to come make the drive back and stand in court, simply to pay a ticket. They couldn't just pay the fine and move on with their lives, they had to schedule, reschedule, schedule again, reschedule, and eventually were able to come down when they weren't in classes or finals and when the officer who cited them was available to be in court.

oh fuck that jail time over parking!

jeesh i used to just shove plastic bags of dog shit in people exhausts when they used to park out front of my house ^_^

sure... you can get a fine or whatever, but JAIL TIME?

I edited my previous reply.

For the record, she wasn't jailed for her lawn, read the article. She was held because she wouldn't release her name and information to the officer and then when he tried to arrest her because she wasn't cooperating, she turned away and "resisted" arrest.

He went there to warn her, she didn't cooperate so he was just trying to do his job, even though he probably should've thought better of the situation, let it go, and came back with another officer to cite the woman.

so according to you it was ok to rough up a 70 yr old lady because she was supposedly resisting arrest..

maybe towns/cities should fucking realize that 1 billion year old ordinances should be looked over.

You're kidding me, again, right? Unfortunately, I think you're serious.

Do you know any of the facts? No.

Would you just be pulling ideas out of your backside, then? Yes.

I have seen many women, in general, resist arrest simply because they feel that male police officers won't touch them. I've seen women attack men because they don't fear repercussion. I have no idea how this situation went but rather from what I can tell the woman admitted to "trying to sit down" so she could "get away" from the officer and go inside.

If this is the case, had she just stood there and not tried to go inside and possibly have been defiant of the police officer's orders than the incident probably wouldn't have happened.

On the other hand, if he just backhanded the woman with the cuffs, clearly he was in the wrong.

I'm going with, based on the woman's statement she resisted arrest and that the officer probably didn't intentionally harm her but went to grab her to take her into custody, where she either fell off balance or he knocked her over.

Should he have tried to take her into custody? Well, its his job but I think he would have been reasonable to have called backup and had another officer there to see the event as it unfolded and to document her resisting arrest, but then again he probably didn't want to call backup for a 70year old woman who wasn't being cooperative in giving her his name so he could issue a warning or citation for her lawn.

Yes, towns probably should, but its the officer's job to enforce the law, not make the law.

Also, these ordinances are in place for the "beauty" of the community and not to drive the value of real estate down.

My parents certainly hated when our neighbors across the street didn't take care of their yard because it reflected poorly on our neighborhood and should we have tried to sell our house, nobody would want to move in next to a bunch of slobs living in an unsightly house.

This woman is 70years old and probably couldn't do the work herself, so it probably should have been warned to her (like the officer was attempting to do) and have help offered to her (atleast in an ideal world).

Yes, it has nothing to do with insane blind enforcement of misunderstood laws. It has nothing to do with an able-bodied man abusing an older woman.

Nothing at all.

Hey, speaking of, I thought you were coming to my house to "kick my ass" or something. When is that happening ?

Blind enforcement of misunderstood laws, says the guy who finds it rational to shoot someone who threw a firework.

I already showed you how and why the law is in place. It effects the reputation of the town, which ties into and effects property values, as well as being unsightly for your neighbors. Would I want you and all your project cars laying around living next to me? Of course not, that looks negatively on the neighborhood. Keep that stuff neat and in a garage and there's no problem. If its strewn across the lawn it is a problem.

As far as blind enforcement, he was generating revenue (or perhaps not even revenue generation because the article said he was writing her a "warning") by enforcing a town ordinance. Don't break the law and there's not a problem. Is it that difficult to keep your residence in neat order? For most people its not, for this elderly woman, it may have been a difficult task which is way the community pulled together and the church offered her help.

I don't support blindly punishing her but the woman flat out said that she sat down and turned to go inside in an attempt to get away from him. This is no different than the skateboarding incident from what we know thus far.

If the cop went slap happy for no reason then there's a problem.

As far as coming to your house to do something to you, I would have never said anything of that nature. I may have said that "someone should" go to your house and beat your ass, because you deserve it sometimes, I would never elude to wasting my time on someone like yourself or anyone else on the internet. I wouldn't waste my time or gas money to travel somewhere to find a little man who preaches bullshit on the internet.

The article says he was merely there to issue a formal caution..

Thats some warning...

I'm not sure if you're trying to be sarcastic or not, including the ellipses, but a warning is exactly what a "formal caution" means.

He was "formally cautioning" her, or "warning" her, that her lawn was not within legally permitted ordinances.

When an officer "cautions" you, he is informing you and thus "warning" you not to perform a certain behavior. Its nothing more.

Also: Just to mirror your reasoning:

I'm the guy that "goes on about" this case, while saying I would shoot someone for throwing a firecracker.

And you're the guy that "goes on about" how it's ok to beat up an old lady who doesn't care for her lawn, but it's ok to haphazardly toss a firecracker at a girl and "have no clue" you could blow her fucking hand off.

You're brain doesn't actually work.
