I'm trying to figure out which engine is best for boost and what modifications it needs. My hp goal is about 300whp , but i want this engine to be VERY reliable, I have about 6k to spend.

I'm planning on putting the motor in my EG si hatch

Thank You for any input ;)

Solution
You don't "need" them... but they are nice insurance against the increased strain on your engine. Plenty of people have gotten good numbers reliably on a totally stock motor. The key to reliability is tuning. Get a chipped ecu with hondata, chrome, ext... and get a trustworthy tuner to dial it in on a dyno.

Pick 2:

Cheap - Reliable - Fast

I vote for an LS motor, with the LS tranny.
^^^True LS blocks are the strongest B-series blocks in my opinion they can handle some abuse.

With the D-series many say a D16A6 block is the strongest in its class.

But my advice to you is to do some research, and then balance out your "hp goals_budget_parts needed" to achieve your goals. Once your satisfied with the plan go for it!

But dont forget to tune, tunning is key!!!

Well you said you got 6k to spend....

Get a motor thats in the 200hp range and then go from there.

So basically H22 or K20/K24? Getting either of those motors into his car is just about going to put him at his budget, especially the K-Series. That's for sure going to put him over his budget unless he can find a killer deal on the motor and tranny and do all the work himself.

He could do a lot more on an LS or a D16 with a $6,000 dollar budget. Plus, if he wants to keep his car a nice civilized daily driver than the H22 or K20 probably isn't the best choice. If you're talking about building a motor for boost, then the biggest, highest-powered engine isn't always the best choice to start with.

Well I wasent talking about specifics. To me in the range of means anything in the 180hp at the least.

What about a b18c5? h22A(94-97)? Hell I think a b18c1 would be a hell of a fun motor to boost.

yea im deffinetly not putting a d series in my car, but the h22 is a possibility it doesnt cost that much at all to put on of those in your car, you jus need to buy the hasport motor mounts , which are like 400, Ls i dont know , i want something thats gona rev out to 8500 at least

If you wanna get something that's gonna rev to 8500 from the factory, then you're gonna spend most of your $6,000 on just the motor. Look towards a B18C5 or K20A2 or Z3. And as far as the H22 goes, it's more than just mounts, you also have to do some cutting of the transmission tunnel to get the shifter to come up through.

If I was gonna boost a car, I wouldn't start with the B18C5. It's got a high compression ratio, it makes all it's power in the high rpms, and the transmission has super short gears. Not the best setup for boost in my opinion. Not to mention the price tag; like I said, you're gonna spend most of your money just getting the motor and putting it in your car.

I still vote for an LS swap with the LS tranny, or even a GSR if you want something with a few more horses and a slightly shorter-geared tranny. In my opinion though, if you're going to be tearing the motor down and building it for turbo then do you really need to start with the highest horsepower motor that the factory makes?

I vote for an LS because it makes decent power down low, and the longer-geared tranny is meant to work with that type of setup. You have to rev the piss out of the VTEC motors to get to their power band. Why do you need a ridiculously high redline for this project? You should be looking for a motor that makes power even in the low rpms, and has a transmission that allows it to stay in boost for a good amount of time so you don't end up dropping it when you shift gears. The LS just makes sense to me for a turbo build up.

well your forgetting that the b16 rev's out to 8500 stock, and with the H22 i was thinking about running a b series trany , like the s80 , or something with a bit longer gears , and k series is deffinetly out of the question , 6k isnt even enough to buy one of those motors

Im with brutal, The LS tranny is the best for boosting, (longest gears) and for 6K you could build a reliable LS motor that can withstand constant bitchslappings. The fact that the LS motor w/ tranny is so cheap will help alot when building the motor for boost.

Then buy a B18C5 and build it up naturally aspirated. There's not really a need for a ridiculously high-revving motor if you're talking about boosting it. Also, a B-series tranny won't just bolt on to an H22. You need an expensive adapter plate. That plate, plus the engine, plus a b-series tranny is once again going to put you up near your budget.

What's so wrong with a D-series or LS? Like Blanco said, why spend the money on some ridiclously expensive motor that's setup to be a naturally-aspirated high RPM screamer when you could dump 2 or 3 grand into a motor that's better-suited for boost, meet your power goals, and then have money left over to do suspension, exterior, whatever you want. I mean what's so great about having a GSR swap if a boosted LS or D16 can blow your doors off ?

Makes more sense to me, but it seems like you've already made up your mind.

well im thinking b16 , gsr or h22, for my budget, a c5 would blow the budget, a gsr i might scrape through, now a ls/vtec is a possibility , but i want to be able to shift around 8k, dont ask why , but its jus why i like honda's , the sound the hi rev and vtec , thats really what seperates them from everyone else, and there cheap and reliable when done right
