As I have been reading, a JDM ZC engine is a direct swap for the d15a engine meaning all I need is the engine to do the swap. However, I am guessing this is only with a manual transmission and I have an automatic. So, the question is, do I need to buy a transmission also and if I do, is it easier to just convert to a 5-speed?

you could get the ZC with the auto transmission like this:

eBay Motors: 11655 JDM Honda Civic EF3 87 ZC 55K ENGINE Auto (item 110155073084 end time Aug-07-07 19:49:59 PDT)

i believe that their description saying it is 87 EF3 engine is not correct as 87 was not EF3 - if the engine they are selling is the one pictured, then it is the correct ZC for the 88-91 CRX/Civic - excellent buy since it comes with intermediate shaft, axles, ECU, etc.

it would be better to convert it to 5-speed, but is a little bit of work

you would need to do the wiring changes to convert from DPFI to MPFI in any case

Given I can buy both that cheap I'm going to just buy something like that.
The only reason I am swapping the engine is because it's going to cost about the same to make the current stock engine pass inspection, so I figured I mind as well put something nice in it while I'm at it.
