Hey guys! I'm planning on doin a quick overhaul on my girls turbo'd B16 and was thinking of putting CTR pistons in! I was looking on ebay and saw a kit with ctr pistons and bearings made by nippon for a low price! Anyone tried these pistons before? I'm planning on high compression with low boost! I don't have too much money and down time since its a daily driver and I seem to have signs that the bearings are starting to knock so I need to overhaul it asap.

if you are tight on money and downtime, why would you put aftermarket pistons in anyways? you should either put low comp pistons in or just replace the barings. it would be a lot easier.

Because the Nippon pistons are $160-180 with new NPR rings and are better than the OEM pistons.
but if the pistons are fine and only the rod bearings are bad, doesn't it make sense to just replace the bearings?

Wasn't nippon contracted by honda to make pistons for the b-series for a while there? Or am I totally off?

A mini-me is a high compression d-series and people still boost it! I figure I bump the compression up since I'm not always boosting because its a Daily Driver! I say 11:1 CR with 7psi won't be much. It's probably the same as a stock B16A CR with 10psi! But on the other hand since its a B16A I was thinking of just P30 pistons so I won't have to shave down the rods to fit them CTR pistons. And I'll still get a little boost in CR from 10.2:1 up to 10.4:1! Well I guess I'll try them nippon or YCP pistons! Thanks Ya'll;)

Does anyone know why the ycp (nippon) ctr pistons brings the cr to 10.95:1 and the oem ctr pistons brings it to 12:1?

Those calculations are off.. it should be 12+ CR or high 11's

YCP is one brand, Nippon is another.

I have YCP CTR pistons for sale if youre interested and they wont cost you 160-180..
I also sell them on ebay.. look for member fjtomei (FJ Distributors) and thats me.

Nippons are ok for all motor..not for turbo though..

I have YCP PCT Type R pistons for sale at ebay too. Theyre made of a much stronger cast than nippons and are coated as well. These pistons are made of the same strength as the YCP vitara pistons used on D16 engines for boost and they have produced over 450whp(Vitaras).

eBay Motors: JDM Civic CTR Pistons, Type R B16B, PCT with Rings (item 250143676292 end time Jul-19-07 10:24:52 PDT)

I find it kind of funny that the main guy who knocks Nippon pistons on this and other forums is the same guy that sells Nippon's competitor...granted I've seen other people say 'YCP is better, nippons won't handle as much power!', but most of them (if not all of them) haven't had hands-on experience with both (or either) piston...

maybe you could further explain what makes the YCP's better than the nippons? I noticed on the ebay auctions (specifically for the Vitaras) advertise an extra oil hole in the wristpin boss to provide 'superior oiling' over the nippons. I believe it also says (or I might have read this on one of the other forums) that the ring lands on the YCP's are thicker.

Now, I have 2 sets of Vitaras; a set of Nippons, and a set of YCP's. Both of them have the 'extra' oiling hole in the wristpin boss, and both of them have ring lands of equal thickness. They also both came from Puerto Rico.

And they also both came in very similar boxes, with very similar wristpin circlips, and both of them came with - get this - Nippon piston rings.

The only thing that I can find that YCP advertises that they have and the nippons don't, that Nippon doesn't advertise, is the teflon (or whatever it is) coating...

either way, I'm going to use the YCP's simply because the people making the big power on these are using the YCP versions, and I haven't found anyone making over 400 on the nippons (although I haven't read any actual first-hand horror stories from the nippons). I just find it kind of funny the main person knocking them is the person who has something to lose if people buy the nippons instead of his brand.

The Main difference is that YCP pistons are made of a much stronger material than the nippons.
YCP pistons are made of AC8 grade aluminum which is a much more stronger cast than OEM Vitara or Honda pistons. Plus they go though a T-6 heat treating procedure to make the piston even harder.

Nippons are not made of ths same material but of a weaker cast and they wont handle as much power/abuse as the YCP pistons...other than that as you said the YCPs are coated with teflon to fight against friction and heat and to provide better start ups.

The rings they come with is total preference from the seller or the client.I guess you bought them from AutomotivePRO on ebay..he sells these pistons with NPR rings only.. I sell them with Hastings because i have proven the pistons with these rings on my Own setup and they worked pefect. I have clients with over 400 whp and every single one of them run Hastings rings..So its my choice of rings

The only vitara pistons i sell with NPR rings are the 75.5mm just because my supplier dont have them for this size in Hastings.

BTW: I can sell Nippons Vitaras..I have access to them but i just prefer the YCPs because they have been proven over and over and i used them on my setup. I havent seen any single Vitara nippon piston setup running in the 10's..not even in the 11 or 12 sec's.. For boost my opinion is that the Nippons sucks..now any other nippon piston for an all motor setup its ok in my opinion.

So your saying ycps are ok with boost. What else compression ratio they make for b series?

Why are you looking to raise the compression??

Just get some stockers.

Running high compression with boost is stupid for a street car for one thing. Using cast pistons for boost and high compression is even dumber. Before buying any pistons I would have a machine shop check out your block. Alot of times cylinder walls are slightly out of round and so on. I would just get factory .10 over pistons along with the ring set. Keep the factory compression or better yet drop it with a cometic head gasket to 9:1. You really have to know what you are doing to make high compression and boost work together. Tunning is absolutley critical along with a block and internals that can handle it reliably.

B16A2 Setup

I'm planning to go with this setup in my B16A2 engine:

- Buddy Club Spec III plus cams
- Unorthodox Cam Gears (Tuner Series)
- Skunk2 valve springs and titanium retainers
- Ferrea valve guides and valve seals
- Buddy Club 0.5 head gasket
- ITR P73 ECU

What pistons do you recommend me Nippon's or YCP's? It seems clear that both are better than OEM CTR pistons right? do you feel it's a disadvantage for YCP's to be made in Taiwan?

Regards,

JMA

i didnt post the link for you to reply to it.. just some reading material
