I'm SO glad I got a starter bike. I am SO glad I learned and aced my MSF course. I am SO glad that I took bike rides so seriously.

I didn't clown around, I respected the 250 everymoment I had it, I loved that bike.

But it's gone. I traded it in . I had $2500 left on the payments, I was getting $2500 offers for trade, so I decided to move up this year instead of next.

I rode a few things, even some scooters (Which is funny.. a 250cc scooter blows my Ninja away up till 40 mph). I rode the
Triumph 1050 (Which is a significant bike)
Honda Interceptor VFR800, 2004
I liked them, I really did. The Interceptor has a TOUCHY throttle, and it bit me during the test ride. Again, what little experience I had potentially saved me a bad injury.

And I also rode, and bought, a 2001 Ninja ZX12R with 2000 miles on it.

A brief description of the 12R:

This bike scares the ever living shit out of me.

I will NEVER touch a drop of alcohol, I will NEVER let anyone ride it. I'm too junior for this bike, I have a limited amount of time to get used to it.

I have to friction zone my way out of my driveway, and off my street. This thing, at it's slowest, is faster than the 250 at it's fastest. It's a challenge to keep it below 50 mph. Intersections pose completely new challenges that I never would have imagined. Every moment on this bike is focus and calm resolve. I ask the bike very nicely before I do anything. Hitting a bump on the highway moves the bike forward 5 mph, and that's with me bracing for the impact.

I don't actually turn the throttle. I don't twist it at all. I apply pressure. I've learned in 100 miles this weekend to NEVER actually move the grip. I moved the grip once. I had to pull over to regain my confidence.

But on the other hand, this is so stable it's nuts. Nothing seems to throw this bike around. Wind, road grooves, turns.. It's just rock steady. I can NOW move my ass around to make a corner... and Wil's advice now comes into play really well.

I toe the pegs, lift my ass out of the seat, and "ask" it to turn. It does it. The ass end comes out slightly and I ask it to come back into line. It does.

I talk to my bike, always have.

I can't stop smiling with this thing. It's SO confidence inspiring, but at the same time, completely bone-chilling terrifying. Roller coasters bore me.

shit!

good for you bro...

lets get some pics and vids of you riding around a parking lot with the wife filming you.

why the 12r?

never thought you would get a bike that big....you just shut everyone up......zip......

pics please!

rofl.. little jump there.. 250cc to 1200cc..

I had the same experience when I rode my brother's modded gixxer. Sheer terror, and it made me smile ear to ear at the same time.

You picked the best bike of its class. I'd take a 12R over a XX or Busa.

Now do you know what I mean when I say 100mph feels like nothing on a real street bike? 100MPH on my suzuki is called.... 1st gear. haha

You'll get use to the power in about.... 2 weeks. at least to the point where its not shocking, Only time my 1K gets to me now is when I'm over 10K RPM and that's just F@$@ng insane!

12R IMO is the better of the class for backroads, still not great, but not bad. Wonderful highway bike and if you're going to put some major miles on it, it's a good choice.

There's a lot of mods out for the 12R it's very mod happy and can take anything from big bore kits, n20 to turbos =)

Let me know when you're in the area so I can spank you with my smaller motored bike =)

Post some pictures!

P.S take it up to about 5K rpm in first gear, let off the throttle then apply it back on with about 1/6 to 1/4 turn of the throttle. Fun times!

I sat on it yesterday, it felt nice...to bad I'm not into bikes...and the first thing I said to Steve..." it was nice knowing ya."

The bike is way too big for steve...way too big...let alone the power it packs. I wonder how many cops are going to pull him over because they think it's a kid riding such a big bike. And I also wonder how long it will take for someone to snag it and pawn it off.

ZX-12R 185hp/475lbs = 2.56lbs/1hp

ZX-2R 36hp/305lbs = 8.472lbs/hp

NICE JUMP! You have no entered the world of HYPERbike. That thing is capable of high 9 second 1/4s off the showroom, with exhaust and sprockets itll snap off low 9s.

Have fun!

Meh, he'll be fine, besides big only makes it heavier and better for him. My bike is 100+ lbs less, and the size of a 600, but with more power then the 12R, Thats why when people ask me what I think of the bike I just smile and tell them its a loaded gun pointing at my head. =) I'm only 160lbs and some of the pro racers are tiny compared to me.

The 12R is a tall ass bike, he might look into lowering it a tad.

Only problem I have with the ZX12R is that in this area it is like the busa, 95% of the riders are some reason not white.

you got me thinking.

My old Suzuki Bandit 6.1 lbs/hp
Honda CBR F4i 3.34 lb/hp
Suzuki GSX-R1000 2.0 lb/hp 1.97 lb/hp W/Ram air.

damnit all this talk about bikes is making me want to ride and its hot, humid, and looking like its going to pour down rain any minute... all day long its been like that. =(

Damn you steve and your new 12R and Im guessing good enough for riding weather!

Good enough for riding weather, yeah. But I'm at work.

I piled 200 miles on it this weekend, and started getting the hang of it. Like I said, I don't actually turn the throttle, I only apply pressure to the threshold.

Went to a show on Sunday, and there were 4 of them there ( all nice white guys, only one younger than me ) and they showed me around it a bit. Apparently I'm missing the cowl cover too. And I can get a little lowering out of it ( I checked out a 3 position dogbone in one, it was nice )

But damn man, 35 mpg. eek.

It's that good? lol

My F4i got 150 miles to a tank if I was riding like normal, my K7 seems to get around 130 miles before I need to fill it up. I was seeing 150 mile tanks while breaking it in but now that its broke in I guess thats gone.

I've heard 36-37mpg is normal but you would have to be stuck in 6th gear at 3-4K to see that.

5 gallon tank, underseat. It's pretty damned neat. I need to go out this saturday and make an appointment to lower it and get the strap base for my tank bag.

Had fun on the way in this morning. I'm trusting the bike in corners now that I've gotten a clue how to apply the throttle.

I used to get the 250 into corners so tight that the rear would kick out. This new machine takes these corners without expressing the slightest concern.

Cornering = All tests passed. Now it's time to hone them.

Nice bike but . . . do you think that you will be able to utilize this bike to the fullest?

Why not just get a 600 that you can raep every day?

Depends on what you consider it's "fullest".

I want to pile on touring bags and use it to go to, say, Canada for a weekend (Or week). I want to take it to Colorado, or California.

I want to use it as a Sports tourer. Now, when you talk about S/T bikes, you can see those that are touring oriented (the Concours 1400) or sports oriented (the Hayabusa). I prefer the more sports oriented shapes. Non-adjustable windscreens, slim looks and flowing body lines.

I also like having the fairing come around the sides of the "hand areas". I just do. Being open to the world like the 250 had, had an effect on me. Not sure what it was.

I like the gauges to be independent of the forks (Which is why I didn't like the Suzuki 500) but at the same time I didn't want them to completely detached from the bike (Like the 650R Ninja).

All sorts of stupid shit went into this purchase. But I understand that a sports tourer has a larger motor to carry passenger and gear. And that a 600 or even 800-1000 ranges get laggy with lots of stuff piled on.

That's only my understanding of it. The real crux of all this decision making was ......

..... I fucking want that. Now.
