sorry boss, its turbo
so i think im going to stop trying to build hondas to go fast and pick up a 305firebird formula, what do you guys think

I think you should kill yourself.

Why on earth would you exchange one slow car for another slow car?

you should see how you like the t3/t4 on your civic before giving up on it

gas is gonna be killer in the 305
reliability is also gonna be killer

Don't 305 3rd gen's run like 16's? I took one in my stock civic si back in the day. Plus, the interior in one of thoes makes my hatch feel like a lexus.

If you like the firebird, pick it up. Just like what was said about the honda- build it right, and it will be reliable. It'll be money either way, right? If you've already checked it out, and are just holding back because you are a honda guy, get over it. I love hondas, but I just went and bought a toyota. You can always pick up another cheap honda later if you change your mind, and in a couple years, you can pick up a newer one to work on for cheap as well.

I almost made the same decision once, but I didn't have the cash at the time. Had a friend that was trying to get rid of one. Don't really regret it considering how things worked out (not having any money led to me buying my integra about a month later), but I still think it would have been a fun car. Another one of my friends is usually flinging it around now, and it looks like a fun toy.

fuel consumption should be better than a 305 with a properly tuned boosted honda
and if its properly built it should retain reliability

With a low boosted 1.6l honda (250 or 300 cc injectors) you are probably going to get around 23mpg highway.

If you go the HMT route and run an FMU, you are probably going to get 20ish on the highway.

How is that better than a firebird?

if you stay out of boost, the gas milage will be fine

True, but thats nearly impossible unless you drive like an old lady . . not to mention the car will not be fun to drive if you stay "out" of boost.

With a T3/T4, and DSM 450's, I will bet he only gets 12mpg under a full load.

injector size is really nill if you have the thing tuned

whether its running 60% of a 450 or 90% of a 300 its still using the same amount of fuel

you're still looking for the same target a/f ratios no matter what injectors you're tuning

He wont do better than 12mpg on a full load.

Get the firebird if you want reliability & equivalent gas mileage.

i often wonder about you man...
check out HMT for a shit load of people getting the same OR BETTER mpg after going turbo

Boosted B16 -> 28mpg (average) Built, tuned and reliable. I love it. :)

Everything that moves on a firebird will break. Namely power windows, power locks, rearview mirrors.. etc..

And the suspension is crap.. And why would they make a 305 firebird when there are much bigger better motors out there? sounds like a small step up from a v-6.

And they are heavy, too.

Your honda handles ok, isn't fast, but it at least gets killer gas mileage vs the 9mpg you'll get with the firebird while stomping on it. "But the sticker says it gets 20mpg!" Yeah, driving miss daisy down a hill, maybe..

I'd get a trans am or camaro with a ls1 if I were looking in that market, but I'm not sure what kind of money you have to spend. '96's are pretty much dirt cheap now.

Get a 93 or 94 camaro. (SS or Z28 or whatever the hell they were calling the fast ones that year) They were faster than the corvettes and had the corvette motor and suspension.

Still plagued with the "everything breaks" problem. And stay away from convertibles!

P.S. Test drove a 1994 camaro that was pushing 600+hp NA. Vette motor stroked to 383, racing heads and "mediumish" cams. It loped, but not much. And it was a sleeper.. Looked 100% stock on the outside and it was muffled very well. I floored it at 120 and the rear tires smoked. That thing was a beast.
