I was changing my oil the other day and I was talking to a friend and didn't realize it at the time but I put WAY to much oil in. Then when I started the car it was shaking so I shut it off and checked the oil and it was like an inch over full. Now it won't start. I checked my plugs and wires and on of the plugs was drowned in oil, but I cleaned it out and it still won't start.
Was wondering if anyone had an idea of what to check.
 
what car is it and how many quarts did you put in it? that will help us give you a good answer.
 
any sparks from the spark plugs? the spark plugs could be old and the oil could of killed it. does it start at all even if choke and dies, or does it crank only and no start
 
iv had that happe to my buddys h22 he put too much oil and he blew his valve cover gasket causing the oil to flood the spark plugs and killing them he changed the gasket rings and spark plugs drained the extra oil and it fired up no problems
 
Only 1 inch did that? Ive done maybe half an inch with no problem at all. Usually all you see is a little power loss, if that. I think it's as long as the oil doesn't touch the crank then its ok but thats just what i've heard.
 
If you get too much it'll get sucked through the vaccuum system and get into the combustion chambers, and a little too much oil there will murder a motor just as well as water will.

I'd suggest a compression check, and check the pcv system / Vaccuum system for large amounts of oil.. Other than that, pull the plugs and wires and either clean them both really well or swap em for new ones and try that.

It is a little discerning that oil got above your plugs, that certainly should not have happened unless you have a bad valve cover gasket set in there..
 
I put new plugs and wires on it, it didn't do anything for me. But if someone has something that shows how the wires match up I'd like to make sure I lined them up right, even though I'm sure I did.
If your wondering why I put some much in is that I had JUST fixed the distributor and was happy that I had my car running again. Plus with my friend there I was in another world.
I'm thinking I may have to take it to a shop, but I doubt I have the money for that.
 
um....did you at least drain any of the oil out?

another question, why did you have about 4 more quarts than you actually needed. when i change the oil in my cars, i usually buy 1 quart more than the engine requires. then you never over fill it.
 
Yeah, I drained it. I put the 5 quart jug in so I could us the jug for the old oil. But yeah, I know it was really stupid.

going 1 quart over shouldn't really hurt it all too bad. normally it will just smoke a lot and burn off.
 
I seriously doubt any serious engine damage was done by filling the crankcase up 1 to 1 1/2 quarts over full. Unless that engine was already on the brink of disaster, then who knows...

you can tear stuff up with too much oil. i dont think that anything would seriously go wrong, but some of the seals etc could have been damaged. happaned to me when the honda service center put 1qt too much in my 90 accord. cost them about 400 in parts and another 600 in labor to fix it.
 
agreeable, a little too much oil is no problem, prob lost of power, bad for seals, doubt anything would blow up on you, drain oil, clean out the spark plug chamber, put half the amount of oil that you would normally need, start it again let it run and then check your oil level again, then put the rest of the oil you need.

Thats what I did, but it won't start. I don't see why either, it has everything it needs to and tries too.
 
best bet is to check the starting system first, see if theres spark from the distributer, all that, then go from relay to fuel system FUSES? if you got free time then take the beast apart and put the motor back together
